Kisha

After getting off from work Friday evening, I went straight home and changed into a pair of old sweats and t-shirt so that I could clean the house from top to bottom. My plans were to clean up and then cook a nice dinner. The boys were getting off the bus at Tre’s parent’s house and spending the night there with him. So I’d planned a nice little evening for Lavar and me. I’d stopped by the store and bought some wine and candles to add a nice little touch to dinner. I wanted him to see that I was trying to make what we had work and that I wasn’t still hung up on my past. Since our talk the weekend before things had gotten back to normal between us and I wanted them to stay that way. He was a good man and I knew that. Exactly the type of man that I needed in my life. He had his shit together and his head on straight. What more could I ask for?

I turned on the stereo, skipped to K. Michelle’s CD, and pressed play. Before starting to clean, I went into the kitchen and took the bag of tilapia out of the freezer so that they’d be thawing. I placed the bag in the sink, then returned to the living room and got busy. While dusting the entertainment center in the living room. I came across an old photo of Tre and me from a few years back. It had gotten knocked over and was lying between the TV and DVR player. In the photo, we were outside at Casper’s house. Tre was leaning back on his car and I was standing in front of him with my back to him and his arms were around my waist. We were both smiling and looked so happy. I remembered that day like it was just the previous day. Casper had invited us to his cookout. We’d all had so much fun that day, playing cards, eating, joking around, and dancing.

Staring at that photo made me realize just how much had changed. Casper was now in jail for murder and trying to kill Tre. Tre and I, the two that everyone thought would be together forever, we no longer together. Tre had two children by someone else. No one from the old crew hung together anymore. Tyson was dead. Shit had just fallen apart over the years. Everything that we’d known and loved back then, no longer existed. On one hand it made me sad to think about it because I knew that those times would never be again but on the other hand I was just thankful for those times and happy memories.

“Those were the good old times.” I mumbled, a smile formed on my lips as I stared at the photo, my fingers tracing the images as I reminisced. I pulled myself together and snapped back to the present. Wiping the dust from the frame, I placed it back on the entertainment center and got back to work.
