If you dive into that sinister entrance, go to 143.

If you check what’s on the back of that notice around the corpse’s neck, go to 152.

“Done!” you exclaim.

“You sure are,” the monkey salesman says.

He hands over a monkey, which scurries up your arm then perches on your shoulder.

The purchase may yet turn out to be a bit of a bargain, Siafu. Despite the peddler’s cynical remark, this is a useful chimp. If you manage to wind it up (which requires a draw of a card – draw of 8 or better) and you forfeit any chance you had of gaining first strike in a combat, its antics will so fascinate your opponent that he/she/it automatically misses every second blow.

After each battle, though, you must draw a card. If you draw a Jack, the monkey shatters, rendering it useless.

Now, off you go with the monkey to 92, where you can select a different option.

There are seventeen people in this chamber. Sixteen of them are dressed in their Sunday best, staring straight ahead, seated upon wooden chairs arranged along one wall. The seventeenth, a neat, nerdy guy in a frock coat, skinny jeans, Chuck Taylor All-Stars and spectacles, is fussily getting things organized.

“Sit!” he orders you, indicating an empty chair with the point of his quill pen. “Sit! Sit! Sit!”

If you follow Ned the nerd’s order, go to 145.

If you leave through the western door, go to 118.

If you head for the northern door, go to 154.

Clang… clang… clang!

The distinctive smell of burning charcoal overlaid with the acrid tang of metal tells you that you are in a blacksmith’s forge.

The blacksmith, a bearded, giant of a man named Smitty, is fashioning a suit of armor on his anvil. Beside him, cooling, is a matching set of gauntlets, with pistol barrels for fingers.

“I calm ‘em guntlets,” Smitty says, nodding toward the gauntlets. “So, is it a weapon you want? A part for your cosplay costume?”

“Neither, kind sir,” you say politely. “I don’t cosplay – this is my superhero uniform – and I already own the best weapons in the superhero business.”

“What, then?” Smitty asks.

“What really interests me is information on the Horde.”

Smitty the smith goes pale. He raises two fingers of his left hand in the traditional sign to ward off the evil eye and mutters, “I don’t know nothing about those undead savages, but I hear the Widow White speak of them. I can tell you this, though… you’ll need a suit of armor if you’re tackling those demons.”

“How much is that suit of armor you’re making?” you ask.

‘It’s not for sale,” Smitty says. “But I’ll give it to the first person that can defeat me in a test of strength or answer my riddle.”

A freebie suit of armor, Siafu? That would be worth having!

But are you going to tackle this muscle-bound blacksmith in a test of brute strength at 146, or trust your brains to answer his riddle at 155?

You approach the pit and look down carefully. In the depths of the pit below are four emaciated old men.
