Success Loves Speed
Letâs look at growth as a graph. Youâre starting from the bottom left corner in the graph, and your goal is in the top right corner. Between you and your goal lies growth. We know now that growth is an iterative process. We have to go through these iterative loops of creating direction, taking some action, failing a bunch, reviewing the action, adjusting the direction, adjusting the action and so on.
Most of us go through this process really, really slowly. We want to be safe and careful (which, youâll remember, is what we were taught in school â go slowly and get it perfect). So you end up with a trajectory like the green loops: slow and steady. You might go through the cycle every few months, whenever you make an adjustment in your life. You can get to your goal that way â itâs just going to take you a really, really long time. But if you speed up that iterative process, you condense the learning to a much shorter period of time, and you start to take action faster, fail faster, learn faster and progress faster, so it starts to look more like the blue loops. The faster you can act and adjust, act and adjust, the faster youâre going to get to your goal. Ray Dalio talks about this in his book, Principles. Just realize that the longer you stretch out this cycle, the longer itâs going to take you to reach that goal. The only thing that makes us stretch this out is fear. Fear of messing up, fear of imperfection, fear of judgement or criticism â and none of that fear is worth it. When you feel yourself delaying the next stage in the cycle, go to your fear journal. Hash it out. And then get to work, and go fast.
