Give Yourself Positive Labels and Affirmations (Without Feeling Cheesy)
I used to feel like saying affirmations every day was cheesy. To be totally honest, I thought it was kind of woowoo, you know what I mean? I guess I didn’t believe they could make a difference, and the whole concept of talking about how awesome I was, or how much money I had (when I wasn’t necessarily feeling awesome, and didn’t have any money) just felt weird.
But that’s not how I feel anymore. Over the years, I’ve learned to embrace affirmations and take them very seriously.
Here’s why.
Words matter.
There’s a reason we are all familiar with the quote, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” It’s because we all understand the power of words.
But still, it can feel awkward at first. When I first started my affirmation practice, it felt foreign, a little uncomfortable, and even a little weird.
Go ahead. Call me a weirdo! I’m here to tell you that what we tell ourselves—and what we call ourselves—matters.
Every night, before I fall asleep, I run through a list of affirmations that ring true with me. They remind me that I am well, I am kind, I am creative. I have others that are super specific to a particular project I might be working on, or a way I might be feeling. They remind me that I get to be in control of how I feel, how I act, and what I bring into my life.
And speaking of what I bring into my life.
One night, I realized that I didn’t have enough positive self-talk or affirmations or what-you-want-to-call-it to cover all the things I needed at that moment. Mostly, a large influx of cash.
So as I lay in bed that night, I heard myself say (in my head—you don’t have to say daily affirmations out loud if you don’t want to), “I have everything that I want. I have everything that I need.”
You guys. I had this weird, warm flash of what I can only explain as knowing through my entire body. In a heartbeat, I realized that I actually already had everything that I ever needed and everything that I ever wanted.
It sounds cheesy, but it was so profound. Almost like a warm hand from another universe was gently laid upon me and gave me startling clarity for just a skip in time.
Of course, once I realized I already have everything I want or need, I quickly amended it to something more specific, like, “I have $250,000 in my bank account.” (No warm Hand of the Universe came forth to tell me I already have that!)
I’m making light of a serious subject, but I’m also serious as a heart attack at the same time.
Kind of like that affirmation.
I do have everything I want. I have my family, and I have my health.
I do have everything I need. I have food, air, clean water, and a warm place to sleep at night.
It sounds weird, I know—but realizing that I already have everything I need made it seem like filling in all the little details should be easy.
