Chapter 16

Rafael

The knife flew by my head and thudded in the wooden fence post behind me.

I glanced from it to the hybrid which threw it and snarled, baring my fangs. He gulped and turned tail to run. I gave chase, my rage on the verge of taking over.

I’d barely gone three steps when a fist caught me in my side, and I whirled around to aim a punch at the long-haired bastard coming at me with another dagger.

“How did you not see him coming?” Mercy’s voice said in my ear as I took another hit to the gut. “Ouch, that looked like it hurt.”

“Is the commentary necessary?”

I ducked under the knife and kicked the hybrid in the back, sending him staggering forward. He popped right back up like a damned weed and slashed at my arm. He missed by a hair, and I spun to the right, elbowing him in the nose. The cracking sound made me smirk, and he yelped, dropping the dagger as his hands flew up to hold his face.

“Can’t help it. You seem a bit off your game. Heads up,” she said.

I caught movement to my left just in time to hit the ground, roll, and come up behind the first hybrid who’d returned for an attack. I put him in a chokehold and growled in warning at the second hybrid, blood coursing down his face.

“See? I’m helping.”

I snorted in reply and waited for the first hybrid to go unconscious in my grip. I tossed him aside and rolled my shoulders, ready for the second one. “You’re not even supposed to be at the office right now,” I muttered when the hybrid took too long to attack.

“I was bored out of my mind. And besides, Iris called to say they needed to test out the new mage drones. I have to say, these are pretty awesome.”

A quick glance upward revealed a small, black drone hovering about twenty yards over my head. These were powered by magic, unlike human drones. Their transport capabilities were supposed to be the best on the market. Not only could the drone magically escape if it was discovered, but if the user was powerful enough, it could bring with it up to five people in the vicinity. Nor had been going on about them for months now, but I hadn’t thought we’d see one for another year. Leave it to Iris to think Mercy would be the mage best suited for the job.

“Oh, get that sour look off your face. This is the most fun I’ve had in weeks,” she said with a laugh.

I fought the urge to smile and braced as the hybrid finally launched himself at me, fists flying. I took him down in three hits, the last a punch knocked the air from his lungs. He gasped as he collapsed to the ground. I pushed him over with my boot.

“Be best if you stay down,” I informed him.

His eyes rolled back, and he flattened to the dirt.

Sounds of fighting came from further down the dirt road.
