Twenty-Seven

Zera

We arrived at Carter’s safe house in the middle of the night. Carter had found what Hunter called a van. He took the soft half of the bed from the motel and laid it in the back, and then made Hunter get on it with Knox and Javion while I sat in the front with him. Only, I’d spent most of the ride sleeping.

My wrists were throbbing, but sleep gave me a much-needed break. They were still hurting when we arrived at the house in the middle of nowhere.

Inside, it smelled a little musty, but it was a lot more comfortable than the motel. Knox was still unconscious and had been taken upstairs by Carter, with Javion right behind them both. Hunter sat down in the kitchen, leaning his head against the table.

“Are you okay?” I asked him.

Without lifting his head, he nodded. “I gave Javion some more of my blood, so I’m feeling a little light-headed from it.”

“How is Knox?”

Hunter paused before raising his head. “DB should have some better medical supplies here—enchanted things with a higher potency.” He frowned. “We should get some for your wrists. It will help.”

“What about Knox?”

“There will be plenty for the both of you.”

“I have it. Stay where you are.” Carter walked into the room carrying a box. He set it on the table and then looked at Hunter. “Can you do this? I’ll get some food cooking. You look like you need it.”

“I think we all need it,” Hunter muttered.

While Carter turned his attention to the kitchen, moving around and opening all the cupboards to look inside, Hunter focused on my wrists. I couldn’t help but look at them, turning my nose up. Most of the area was black, going down below the top of my skin, but there were also patches of wet blood.

“Monsters.” Hunter growled. Despite the anger in his voice, he applied the cream carefully. The initial contact had me wincing, but almost instantly, the magic started to work.

“What do we do next?” I asked.

Carter, who had been cutting something on the other side of the kitchen, turned. “Tonight, nothing. We’re going to eat and then we’re all going to get some sleep. We all need it. We’ll discuss everything tomorrow. Knox should be awake by then.”

“Are you going to make Javion leave again?”

Hunter looked at me and then at Carter.

The older gargoyle let out a long sigh. “We will discuss everything tomorrow.”

“You can’t make him leave again,” I told him.

“Zeraora—”

“No, he must stay.” I wasn’t sure why I felt so strongly about that. It wasn’t just that he helped me when the Lycans had us, but something else. Like, if he wasn’t with us, something really bad was going to happen.

Carter rubbed at his forehead and sighed. “Zeraora.”

“Carter, he needs to stay.”

“Fine.” He shook his head. “Fine.”

I still couldn’t explain why I felt relief at that, but being satisfied that Javion would be safe, I sat back into the chair and actually relaxed. I glanced at Hunter and found him staring at my wrist, frowning.
