PLEASE SAY WHY YOUâRE CALLING
SHE SAW HIM ON THE first day of her assignment. She was walking along the canal bank to the office. He was just ahead of her. She blended into the stream of people on their way to work. Nobody would look at her and think, you are not from here, you donât know where youâre going. She knew exactly. She had walked and timed the route over the weekend. Twenty-two minutes from the hotel to the call centre building. She allowed for thirty, to build in margin for error.
She walked in his wake. His arm extended over the statue on the bench as he passed it. It was not a lingering touch. A cup of the shoulder, not breaking pace. As you might do to a friend sat peacefully, so as to acknowledge their solitude and wish them well without disturbing them. Touch a statue for no reason though. Why do that? Thereâs no efficiency to be gained. It is a wasted action. Just today, or every day? Just in the morning, or on the way home too? These were distracting thoughts and not part of the process. In the evening the statue would be warm to the touch, iron limbs baked by the sun, which the man at the hotel reception said might be the best we get all summer, even though it was only April. Enjoy it while it lasts, he said to her. Because it wonât.
It sounds like you are asking about your balance, is that right?
Iâm sorry, I didnât get that. Please say, in a few words, what you are calling about.
