Chapter Eight

Cage

Bindi’s a shifter. They’re both shifters…

I still can’t wrap my mind around it. Every time I think I’m coming to terms with the adorable little redhead skipping along beside me really being a fox and Bindi being a… whatever she is, revulsion takes over again and I have to stop myself before I reach for my gun. I keep going around and around in circles as I follow them deeper and deeper into the tunnels.

I have no idea where we are right now. We’re so deep underground and have taken so many turns through abandoned subway tunnels that we could be halfway across the city or mere feet from where we started at Rector Street and I’d never know the difference.

“Left passage, Kit,” calls out Bindi as we reach a fork in the tunnel. I wonder what Bindi’s second form is. Is she a fox like Kit? A wolf like the monsters in our training simulations? I don’t even know what the possibilities are for her—is it just mammals? Reptiles? Could she be a snake?

No… not a snake, I think to myself, watching her from behind as she leads me through the pitch-black tunnels. She has a little sway to her step now that I have a chance to really watch her and she’s not faking a limp. There’s something soft, almost sensuous about the way she moves. I don’t see her as a snake.

What the hell am I even talking about?

“Lily? Logan? Nim? We’re home!” Bindi calls out into the darkness, and she ducks down through a hole in the rusty metal grating blocking the rest of the tunnel. Droplets of water fall down around us, their splashes echoing eerily against the narrow concrete walls.

“Who’s Lily?” I ask, squeezing painfully through the tiny hole, and as if in response to my question, a dim lantern flickers to life through the tiny window of a steel door up ahead. Its glow isn’t strong enough to light up the whole tunnel out here, but it’s enough to tell me where we are. We’re in a subway end-pipe, an enormous drainage fitting designed to keep the subway from flooding during storms.

Bindi smiles at me, and Kit knocks on the door in three places, each time a different pattern of sounds in rapid succession.

“They’re back! They’re back!” calls out a young girl’s voice from inside. The door unlocks with a loud clang and swings open.

A pale little face peers out from around the corner, a teenage girl with a wisp of platinum blond hair dipping down in front of her eyes. She catches sight of me and then bolts back behind the door with a nervous squeal, slamming it shut in our faces. Nice to meet you too, Lily.

“It’s okay, sweetie. It’s safe,” Bindi says. She shoots me another smile, this time looking a little embarrassed. She’s removed her hood, and her once glowing blue eyes are almost solid black now, giant, gleaming hollows set in a pale, perfect face. Her dark wavy hair streams out behind her, a little longer than shoulder-length, maybe.
