Chapter Six

Bindi

Nim steps forward, the thin rays of light illuminating his bare chest. There’s a new scar across his stomach, the terrible claw marks gouged deep into his skin. Even with his shifter blood, the wound hasn’t healed completely.

His black eyes flicker from Cage to me, and before I can say anything his lip lifts in a sneer at Cage.

“Feel closer to your savage roots yet?” he asks. “Getting your dick wet with us fellow shifters?”

Cage moves to step forward but I stop him with my hand. My senses are on high alert, and I don’t sense danger from Nim. Not toward me, anyway.

“What are you doing here?” I ask Nim.

“I smelled you,” he says, shrugging. His eyes are shielded, low. “Thought I would see what you’re doing back in the tunnels. Thought I could help. Where are the kids?”

“Don’t tell him anything,” Cage says.

“The kids are trapped in the armory.”

“Bindi—“

“He already knows that much,” I say to Cage. Then, turning back to Nim: “We need to break them out.”

“There’s no getting inside there,” Nim says. “I’ve seen that building. Guards and razor wire everywhere. The fence might be electrified, too. Not sure.”

He brushes his hair away from his eyes and I see for the first time that he’s cut along the hairline as well, blood scabbing at his temple and up the right side of his face. I want to go to him, to dab his wounds and take care of him. I can’t help but think of him as a child, even though his actions have shown me that he’s more than that now.

He betrayed us.

“Let’s say we could get inside,” I start. “Then what?”

“Bindi,” Cage says. “Let’s go.”

“What?” Nim says, his eyes glinting fiercely. “Big old bear scared off by a little kitty?”

“You’re a traitor.”

“So are you,” Nim spits.

Two equal looks of hatred, two glaring sets of eyes in the dark of the tunnel. My chest is so tight I can’t breathe.

“Stop,” I whisper.

“You’re the reason the kids are locked in there! This is all your fault!” Cage’s face is red, and I can see the signs of him about to shift. His muscles twitching, anxious to change.

“My fault? Who’s the one wearing the military uniform? You’re the one who led the troops into the tunnels to destroy our home! You’re the one—“

“STOP!” My scream echoes down the stone tunnel, ricocheting back softly. Stop... stop... stop.

“Cage, go check on the alley topside.”

“You can’t expect me to leave you alone with this—”

“Stop it, Cage.”

“He’s dangerous.”

“I can take care of myself.” I cut him off before he insults Nim again.

Cage stands seething. I turn and cup his cheek with my hand. The connection between us sparks with a sharp friction that wasn’t there before. So this is how it is to argue. But with my touch, he begins to calm down. His eyes are anxious, fearful for me, scared of what could happen if he leaves me alone with Nimrah.

“Please,” I whisper to him.

He looks up at Nim, his anger still palpable, and turns without saying another word.
