Life at Purple Oasis was nothing like I expected it to be, but only because I'd assumed that this kind of living wasn't around anymore. Instead of everyone mostly fending for themselves like they had at the Spire Oasis, this hub had support systems in place so nobody had to, giving it an actual community feel rather than a place people had congregated because the alternative was too dangerous.

The falling evening put a halt to activities for those who didn't have good night vision but it felt nice to be in tune with the world. Rise with the crack of dawn, sleep when it was dark, a natural rhythm that felt right and it suited me well.

The only downside I'd encountered so far was having to share a room instead of having a space to myself, but it wasn't so bad. And as far as I could tell, Brandon was a good guy.

He grunted and set aside whatever he was working on, noticing that I was watching him. I needed to stop that or he'd think I was the creepy one.

"You signed up for a profession yet?" Brandon asked.

I nodded. "Yeah, Zoe's friend helped me get into the guards. I did that in my last hub so I'm used to the work." And it made me feel useful.

"Nice. I'm just a labourer, doing odd jobs when I'm needed. It's not ideal but at least I'm participating, you know? Part of the community."

"Yeah, it's nice being a part of something."

"What was your last hub like? Before it fell?" The curiosity in his voice made me wonder how long he'd been sitting on the question.

Probably the entire week we'd known one another.

I propped my head up with my arms and stared up at the ceiling. "Dreadful. Nobody talked to anyone if they could help it, but there was some order. When we discovered that the officials had abandoned the system, it started to become even worse. People pillaged, pilfered, and ransacked like I've only seen in the very beginning of the apocalypse."

He grimaced. "That's rough."

"Yeah. I didn't want any part of it so I left. I got lucky and ran into Zoe and Stella, who let me tag along and now I'm here." I could never summarise just how lucky I felt for that turn of events to anyone. Who knew where I'd have ended up if I hadn't run into them. Potentially at the Nest being miserable for the rest of my life. Some of the other shifters had told me stories about that place in the past week that made it seem like I had a narrow escape.

Brandon nodded. "Yeah, this is a good place to be. You're a shifter, right?"

"Mmhmm. Kestrel," I said, not finding any reasons to hide what I was. "You?"

"Empathy witch."

"Sorry, man." I winced.

He gave a dry chuckle, probably because my apology revealed I knew how tough the apocalypse had been on his kind, many of them just hadn't been able to cope with the new reality.
