Aliens?

General Haymaker shifted uneasily behind his huge mahogany desk, which was bright and shiny on top, except for a cigar lit and smoking all by itself in a crystal ashtray near a vented window that looked out into the ready room, where hundreds of technicians watched monitors, secured top secret channels, watched Kremlin activities, White House activities, and Beijing activities for analysis and reports.

Earth satellite feeds were bounced to the secret antennas which were a series of special wires laid across the entire of London to amplify and clarify them and funnel them to G1 for analysis and archiving.

Deep sea submarines and drones plied the oceans feeding more data. Both friendly and unfriendly.

G1 had no actual friends but its self, but considered Britain a friend and the US mostly, except when their work interfered with corporate profits. Then G1 went deep black and revealed nothing.

Corporate profits be damned!

People were the thing, not gold bullion, or green dollars.

“I see, rather cumbersome,” General Haymaker agreed, plunging a thick thumb beneath his cigar, sweeping it to his lips, taking a suck, and then blowing the smoke at Higgins and March.

“Sorry,” he apologized.

He always forgot the first blow and would later blow to the window. He was a conscientious man, but a trifle forgetful of his manners at times.

March leaned forward and tapped the desk briskly a moment, searching for the right words, but Higgins beat him to it.

“Extraterrestrial.”

March and General Haymaker gave her immediate stares.

“You believe that, March?”

The General never called March by his last name. Said it was too impersonal. He liked to keep his agents close and being personal was how he did it. If someone were hurt, he was the first man to show up with flowers and candy.

If someone were dying, he would commandeer a rocket if necessary to be there by their bedside.

NASA could be very helpful at times with their experimental craft and Nellis Air Force Base with their...ah-hem...not really existing UFO craft.

March sighed, leaned back and rubbed his forehead a moment, trying to remember what had been eating away at the back of his mind.

“I do not!”
