“Bear, we all clear?” Alex asked, through the earpiece.

I took another look around. Surrounded by dense trees, I stood at the top of a hill behind the dilapidated trailer we were there to search. The midday sun hung bright overhead, but the breeze brought a chill that came with the taste of winter on its tail.

“You’re good,” I said softly, and focused on my comrades below. Leo glided toward the back door, his golden fur glinting in the sunlight, as he sniffed the perimeter. Alex followed behind the lion, his gun pointed down, but at the ready.

After I left Teij’s office earlier, he’d gone down to speak with Blair himself, and found out this little shit box was used for more than just a secret meeting place. And with plenty of time before the deal was supposed to go down, we wanted to search out every nook and cranny.

We’d watched the place from a safe distance for about an hour, before deciding to get a closer look. And just as we had expected, there wasn’t a trace of anyone for miles.

“Smells like shit back here,” Alex murmured.

I heard the back door open with a screech, before they both disappeared from view.

“Looks like it, too,” he continued. “There’s garbage all over the place, and this stench is just fucking nasty. I’ll take this room,” he said, to Leo. “You take the back.”

Keeping one eye on my surroundings, I kept watch, as Alex and Leo searched for clues as to what the fuck was going on here. The run down home sat on an acre of land in a clearing, with no other houses nearby. Weeds had grown three feet tall, though patches of dirt scattered across the acreage. It was painfully obvious, the place hadn’t been looked after in years. The roof of the trailer had fallen in on one side, and rust covered the metal siding. The front screen door hung open, moving back and forth occasionally, when a strong breeze swept by. The longer I stared at the dump, the more confused I became. On the one hand, it was the perfect place to do dirty deeds, but the place just felt wrong. It was too deserted. I had my doubts, but we wouldn’t be worth shit if we hadn’t at least checked it out.

Blair had told us we’d find plenty of evidence inside. At first, he’d been adamant that he knew nothing else, but after Teij’s gentle prodding, he admitted that there might be something on the big kahuna drug lord we’d been looking for. And according to another biker, this house was not only used as a secret meeting place for drug transfers, but it was also where they cooked the stuff. The fucker also mentioned that we’d find intel on their boss.

The werewolf was lucky I hadn’t been invited down to the cells during that interrogation. Especially after lying to me.

I shook my head and glanced around again. Large dark clouds were moving in, blocking the sun and causing the afternoon air to cool considerably.
