But why at times don’t we listen to those we are in relationship with? Why do we drift off, thinking about other things, while nodding politely, bouncing in and out of the conversation, responding with disconnected responses or sometimes a blank stare? Could be several reasons—selfishness being at the core. The biggest possibility is accepting that in the moment, we are simply lacking in faith.

Let me explain. Whenever we drift, we typically are distracted by thinking about things we think are more important. We think that somehow in the midst of someone talking to us, we are going to discover some value or insight that might impact the important thing we’re distracted with. But there’s no time to be effective in that. WE’RE IN A CONVERSATION! The lack of faith comes in because we don’t believe God will honor our giving a full commitment to stay 100-percent focused and pay attention to every word, nuance, body language, etc., so we drift.

Since it’s one of my more apparent struggles, I had to ask myself what kind of God I would be trusting if he didn’t honor my giving my wife, family, friends, and those who I know or have even just met total focus, knowing he would provide the time necessary to think and deal with ALL other things I might be distracted with. I realized I didn’t trust God for that in conversations, so I would dart in and out of them trying to solve the things of my life while in conversations with others. Now imagine talking with Jesus. Do you see him distracted or focused, zeroing in or drifting away? He’s all-in because he values people and he trusts his Father that he can be fully engaged, and all else will be fine.

It honors others when we stay present in conversations, and we gain more enjoyment, insight, and nice surprises when we do so. Say no to distractions and yes to trusting God with the rest of life and whatever other benefit we are deceived into thinking is derived from distraction. Listen with focus today and see what becomes clear.
