JACK

There’s something about the wolf that screams powerful.

I would hazard a bet that I’m sitting in a room with a pack leader.

Fuck.

When Ame told me werewolves worked at the bank, I still thought I could get through this interaction without too much trouble. All I want to do is open a fucking bank account.

This guy has other plans.

“No.” I keep my sentences short. To the point. “It’s not. I’m living here now, and I want a local bank. That’s it.”

The wolf’s mouth curves into a smile while his eyes narrow and trace over me. There’s a shadow of familiarity about him, and I wonder if this wolf knows Finnick. The two might be related for all I know. If they are, he probably won’t take kindly to me offing the backstabber at the first chance I get.

“See,” Baron rumbles, “now, that’s where we run into a problem.”

“If you need a character reference, I can provide one.” Ame leans forward, an open, honest expression on her face, her movement bringing me a hint of her mint scent, mixed with the chocolate she’s stress-eating.

I want to throw her over my shoulder and sprint out of this room until I get her to safety. But this mythic might try chasing us down. I know how much wolves love the hunt.

When Baron flicks his attention to Ame, his smile takes on a genuine tilt. My hackles go up, and I barely suppress a snarl.

“Thank you, Ms. Shelly. But that’s not the problem. The issue we have here”—he taps a thick finger on the meeting table—“is a lone wolf living in pack territory.”

“I’m not in your territory.” My voice hums with restrained hostility. “I’m living in the Shelly house. That belongs to them.”

Instead of clearing things up, the wolf’s brief pleasantness goes brittle. “That’s Of the Wing territory. And they’re witches.”

“Better witches than wolves,” I mutter.

Confusion twists Baron’s brows before he clears the expression from his face. “You’ll need to speak to Moira MacNamara, the owner of Folk Haven Realty. She can let you know about the property and land available in Of the Claw territory. Or, if you prefer, vacancies in town, which is a neutral living zone. But no matter where you live, all of Folk Haven and Lake Galen are the territory of the Folk Haven pack.”

Baron reaches a hand into the lapel of his suit jacket and pulls out a business card. “Here’s my contact information. Get in touch, and I’ll send you instructions. You can stay in town as you petition to join. Decisions are made two nights before the next full moon. As long as there are no issues, you’ll be a member of the pack in less than a month.” The wolf offers me a confident half-smile, as if he’s extending some kind of gift I should be grateful for.

Panic and rage claw at my insides.

“You’ll be a member of the pack. One of us.” Finnick’s deep voice creeps up from my past memories, and I don’t know if I’m going to vomit or shift right here, in the middle of a bank.
