Chapter 9

“Aw, Mrs. Lowery,” Sophia said sweetly, as the housekeeper stepped into her chambers only minutes before they were to leave for the Clarendon ball, “you look amazing.”

And she did. She looked ten years younger, the pale gown of cream satin in stark contrast the dark colors and heavier fabrics she usually preferred. Gamely, Mrs. Lowery pointed her toe forward, showing Sophia the slippers to match, the ones Sophia had insisted she must have.

“Your hair!” Sophia exclaimed, approaching and spinning the woman around to take in both the front and back of her coiffure. “It’s wonderful.” Sophia had never given much thought to the woman’s hair, be that it was ever in a tight chignon, never a wisp of curl escaping. Until now. The style was loose and soft, looking so much lighter that Sophia thought she might actually be a strawberry blonde.

Mrs. Lowery blushed over Sophia’s delight in her transformation, admitting, “His lordship’s girl is quite adept. She trimmed a bit, ‘round the front.” Indeed, several short loose waves framed her face, showing her in a completely different light.

“You are absolutely beautiful,” Sophia breathed.

“But look at you, Miss—like a princess from a fairy-tale,” said Mrs. Lowery, and stretched out Sophia’s hands to take in her ensemble, a sumptuous satin gown of white with a frilly ruffled hem, whose only other adornment was the shirred bodice with a lace overlay.

Sophia did feel particularly pretty tonight and hoped that the earl might notice. She was blessed with mostly agreeable hair that only needed time for the maid to set the ends of the pinned-up length into curls at the back of her head.

“I’m so excited,” Sophia said, dancing over to the slipper chair to sit and put on her shoes. “And I’m not going to worry about the baron. I’m not going to let him spoil my fun.”

“I was going to suggest that exact thing!”

Sophia grabbed up her cloak, or rather the earl’s mother’s cloak, as she’d not been able to find a ready-made one that had suited her when they’d been shopping yesterday and took Mrs. Lowery’s hand. They found the earl and Cotton waiting in the foyer. It hadn’t been planned that Cotton should attend the ball, but as news of the baron’s presence in London had put them on alert, it was decided that Mr. Cotton might now assign himself the earl’s gentleman friend from Yorkshire, and he’d been quickly fitted by Beckwith’s personal tailor for the fine formal wear he now sported.

Sophia might have liked to have danced down the stairs, so excited was she with tonight’s outing. Her coming out had first been delayed by her father’s untimely death, and then, one year later, cut short by her grandfather’s passing. Of course she did not lament the lack of a proper season yet, would much rather have her father and grandfather with her, but she didn’t know any young person who wasn’t or hadn’t been excited about their first season in London. She recalled being nervous last year, even as she had been thrilled by the pomp and finery and extreme manners on display.
