Chapter Fifteen

“Took you long enough.” Echo chuckled condescendingly. “Did you really think your little plaything’s race was all that special?”

I spun around and glared at him. I spoke slowly to ensure there was no room for confusion. “He is my mate. Don’t you dare understate what our relationship is, and he is special. He’s more of a man than any of you are, yet you insinuate that I’m the slow one.”

“Annabel,” Midnight warned, but I couldn’t contain my rage.

Babe, is everything okay? Cyrus linked, concern swirling between us.

Argh, sometimes our link wasn’t ideal. I didn’t want to worry him every time I grew frustrated, but given our situation, of course, my heightened feelings would cause him anxiety. Just Echo being a jackass, but it’s fine. Midnight is taking me to the garden to work with her, and they’re filling me in on the origins of the wolf pack.

“Listen here, girl.” He might as well have said bitch. “You need to understand your place in this pack. You may be the alpha’s kid, but you’re a female, which means you’re only good for one thing…” He paused and chuckled. “Okay, maybe two.”

The sexual innuendo was clear, but I had no idea what he meant about the second thing. “What’re the two things?”

“You’ll figure it out soon enough.” A cruelness hardened him.

Midnight tugged me back into motion. “We need to keep moving.”

I opened my mouth, but something in her face stopped me. Even though she hadn’t raised me, I understood the look. She was telling me to shut up and trust her. It was the same strained look she’d given me last night when she’d taken me to Cyrus. I needed to know what she was protecting me from.

Going with my gut, I forced myself to listen to her. She’d had my best interests at heart since I was born, so maybe I should cooperate until something gave me pause.

The closer we got to the garden, the more the air around me charged with that strange sensation. What could only be magic rubbed against my skin, but it felt different from when the witches had tried to hide my wolf.

Midnight said, “We four mates weren’t initially from this pack. Those who don’t have the same fur are mated to people who were born into this pack. I’m assuming it’s similar to how the silver wolves operate since you were fated to one of them.”

“Fated,” Uma squeaked. “Wait, you found your fated mate?”

“You aren’t all fated?” I’d heard that people could have chosen mates, but for these women to endure this kind of treatment, the men must have something over them.

Uma shook her head.

That answered a question that had been nagging me. No wonder these men treated the females like shit. They weren’t fated mates; they were chosen. If they’d completed the mate bond, wouldn’t the men still feel a connection to these women?

“We fought it initially since my wolf—” I stopped, barely in time. I didn’t want to say too much about my past in case I unknowingly gave them information about the coven.
