Chapter Three
Gaspar came to such a sudden stop that it was all he could do not to keel over. Within three wide strides, he moved from the street to the front door of his childhood home, his heart pounding fiercely in his ears as he saw the front door was ajar. He reached out and pushed it open further, noting that the house was dark while he listened for any sign of movement. A faint whimpering sound came from somewhere within the darkness, and he tried to keep his fears of what he would find at bay as he strode into the house. The fact that the living room was empty was of no consolation as he moved from room to room. He felt the acidic bile churning in his stomach, threatening to overcome him, but Gaspar forced himself to ignore it as he hesitated at the closed door of what used to be his bedroom. The whimpering came from the other side. Wrenching the handle, he threw the door open, and upon seeing his young son, pinned to the wall and brutally murdered, fell to his knees and vomited violently. The sound of his wifeâs moans snapped him out of his grief, and he scurried across the carpet on his hands and knees towards his old bed. His wife was sprawled across it, the severity of her injuries apparent with only a fleeting glance.
She reached for him, and he sat on the edge of the bed, gently lifting her up so he could cradle her. The movement pained her, but she gripped at his shirt with what little strength she had left.
âI am so sorry,â he said, barely holding back a sob. He held her as tightly as he dared as he gently stroked the hair away from her face.
âItâs not your fault. Itâs not,â she replied, her voice barely audible, âI wouldnât change this time with you for anything. I thought you were dead to me forever.â
Gaspar felt the tears streaming down his face, and he let them fall, not wanting to let go of his wife for one second. He knew they had precious few left.
âIf youâd never met meâ¦â
âThen, I would never have known a love like ours,â she cut him off. âAnd I wouldnât have had two such wonderful children. Please, tell Caroline I love her, and I am so proud of her.â
Gaspar nodded, not trusting himself to speak.
âShe found us. I donât know how she did, but she found us. There was nothing I could doâ¦â she tried to explain.
âI know, sweetheart. You were so brave. You both were. Iâm here now. Youâre the love of my life,â he told her.
She smiled up at him through the pain, âI love you, Gaspar. Always,â her eyes fluttered, and her head lulled back against his arm as her life slipped away. Gasparâs grief-filled howls filled the night.
