Chapter Twenty

Ryan held the pickup door for Shandra and escorted her up the walkway to the lodge. After the detectives left, he’d dug up a bit more on Tabby. That information had Shandra wanting to question the staff at the lodge.

“Do you think the detectives will be here?” she asked.

Ryan held the door open and shrugged. “I would think if they came straight here from your place they would have left by now.”

Shandra hoped so. After their comments to Ryan about him obstructing justice, she didn’t want to get him in trouble because she felt she could learn something about Sidney and Tabby’s whereabouts the night Carl died.

“Look it’s Meredith.” She scooted across the lobby and followed the woman who was the manager of the lodge. They’d worked together on a couple of art events held here.

“Meredith? Meredith?” Shandra called as she closed the distance between them.

The woman spun around. A smile spread across her face. “Shandra! What a surprise.”

“Hello.” Shandra stopped and held her hand out to the woman. They shook and Shandra drew Ryan forward. “Meredith Gamble, this is my friend, Ryan Greer. Ryan, Meredith.”

“Pleased to meet you, Ms. Gamble.” Ryan shook hands with Meredith.

“Please, call me Meredith. We aren’t as formal as most businesses our size.”

“Yes, that’s what makes this lodge so inviting,” Shandra said, meaning it and hoping it helped her grease the woman’s vocal chords about the lodge and the owner, Sydney Doring.

The woman’s cheeks blushed as she pushed her horn-rimmed glasses higher up her nose and smiled. “Thank you. Hosting the art events is a boon to our business in the summer months. Right now, with all this snow, we don’t have enough rooms to accommodate everyone who wants to stay here.”

“Sydney would be in a world of hurt without you running things for him,” Shandra said. She knew the woman wasn’t crazy about her philandering boss.

“If he’d spend as much time looking at the books and okaying repairs and updates as he did playing room tag with the wealthy women staying here, this place could accommodate more skiers.”

“I thought I saw him in the bar the other night with a young blonde woman,” Shandra said.

“Ms. Vincent. I thought she’d be gone when her benefactor was found dead on the slope.” Meredith huffed and showed definite dislike for Tabby.

“I’m sure the police told her not to leave town,” Ryan slipped in.

Meredith tilted her head to the left as if thinking. “That could be. They’ve talked to her nearly every day. But she isn’t paying for her room. Mr. Doring is comping it.”

“Really? Why would he do that for a woman he barely knows?” Shandra had worked the three of them into an alcove off the main hallway.

“He’s getting to know her, pretty well. Her and the woman in room four-twenty-seven. If he’s not with one, he’s with the other.” Meredith shook her head and pursed her lips. “He isn’t even discreet. Which will cost us several of the regulars if I can’t keep them happy with perks and such.
