Chapter 20

Early the next afternoon, Clarissa sat at the dining table with her laptop and a bowl of cereal. It was early afternoon in Detroit but early evening in South Africa.

She had dragged herself out of bed to have this call with Tagama. Remy was still in bed asleep. Lucky shit. She wished she was still in bed, but she had work to do.

They had stayed up past dawn having sex all over the condo. She still couldn’t look at the couch without remembering the way that Remy had fucked her mouth.

“What did you learn yesterday?” Tagama stared at her through their video conference link.

She finished her mouthful of cereal before answering, “The Sword is probably with one of the religious groups that call that pocket dimension home.”

“Good. The Shaman should be landing soon. Don’t head there before seeing him.” Tagama pointed a finger at her. “He has charms that he wants you to wear while you’re there.”

Clarissa couldn’t keep the shock off her face. “I can’t believe he actually got on a plane. The same Shaman who hates to drive fifteen minutes away from his home.”

Tagama laughed. “It surprised me too when he said he needed to head to Detroit.” Then, the king sobered up. “I suspect he wants to be there when the Sword is found.”

“It would make me feel better if he could cloak it.” Clarissa pushed her cereal bowl aside. “Other than the first night, we haven’t seen a sign of Raphael’s people.”

“Which means they are letting you and Remy do the hard work of finding the Sword.”

There was no question that the attacks would come fast and furious once the Sword was in their possession.

“Are you calling into tonight’s meeting with Queen Sascha?” Clarissa hoped so. It would make deciding what to do with the Sword easier.

A faint smile tilted Tagama’s lips. “Yes. I’ve been in contact with her the entire time you’ve been in the United States.”

Why was she surprised? There was no way he was going to let his heir handle things when he could dip his paw in.

He held up a hand, stopping Clarissa from commenting. “Why didn’t you tell me your father was harassing you again?”

Gods, she wanted to drop her head on the table. If she found out who tattled on her, she would bite them. “I’ve handled him each time. With the search for the Sword and the antidote, it seemed insignificant.”

As soon as she saw the explosive expression on Tagama’s face, she realized it was the wrong thing to say. Oh, shit.

“Insignificant? That bastard keeps trying to kidnap you, and you think it’s insignificant? Why is he trying so damn hard to get you back?”

Clarissa wanted to know the same thing. But, at the moment, she had to get Tagama past being pissed that she hadn’t told him about the kidnapping attempts.

She spent the rest of the call calming her king down. When he was finally calm enough to end the call, she was drained.

They had to find the Sword soon so they could go home where her father couldn’t reach her.
