109. THE GHOST OF CITY HALL

And then we have ghosts here at city hall. I call him old Mayor Parker. When this building was built in 1914, John Parker was mayor of Meridian. He served two terms as mayor, but not consecutive terms. And in his second term, he died of a heart attack right here in city hall. It was actually on a train trip to Hattiesburg. But there are things that happen at night when you are in the building and that the custodian is always talking about. They’ll come in and find lights cut off or lights on, or they’ll come in and hear voices. There’s also a lady that died here in that building. The old jail was in the first floor.

The reason I call it Mayor Parker is when Mayor Kemp was mayor of Meridian, I was in his office one day discussing something, and he got to asking ’em about Mayor Parker. His grandson was a friend of Mayor Kemp’s. He was asking me what he was like as a mayor and what kind of information I had on him. I was turned just like I am now. Mayor Kemp was sitting across the desk from me, and my back was to the light. As you go into the mayor’s office, there’s a light—it’s not a spotlight—on the wall. And all of a sudden, he said, “Did you see that?” I said, “No. What are you talking about?” “I’ve noticed that every time we start talking about Mayor Parker, that light comes on. And when we quit discussing him, the light goes off.” So we did a little experiment. We’d talk, and then we’d quit. And sure enough, the lights went on and went off. It could have been a short or something.

But anyway, that’s why I say it’s Mayor Parker. The custodian won’t talk to just anybody about ghost stories. There are just a few of us around now who had had things happen to them. We have a new security system now. Our old security system used to go off and on at odd times during the night. I always teased him [the custodian] that it was the ghost fooling with the security system.
