Chapter 20

Harriet

This is officially the worst morning of my life. I shove my dead, useless phone into the front pocket of my backpack and glare out the window of my mom’s crappy Jeep Wagoneer. I was so caught up hanging out with Henry, Dorian, and Elsie last night that I totally lost track of time and didn’t go home until after midnight. By that point, I was so tired and irritated about the looks my aunt kept giving me on the drive home that I completely forgot to plug my phone in before falling asleep.

Which means my alarm didn’t go off, and I woke up less than ten minutes ago. While I had time to shower, I didn’t have time to dry my hair or do my makeup. I know it’s stupid and vain of me, but Goddess, I’m so upset Owen and Spencer are going to see me like this. I have a makeup bag in my locker, but the guys will probably be looking for me first thing since I never texted Owen this morning asking for a ride.

“You shouldn’t worry so much,” my mom says. She sounds way too pleasant and chipper for how early it is. “You’re a beautiful girl with or without makeup, and I’m sure your boyfriends will agree.”

Goddess, please kill me. I groan and tug on my wet hair. “First of all, they’re not my boyfriends. The guys are just my friends. Second of all, nobody except for you would ever think I’m beautiful when I look like a drowned rat with bags under her eyes!”

My mom cackles. No matter how mad I’ve been at her, I can’t help but fight a smile at the sound.

“If you’re a drowned rat, you’re a very cute one.” She reaches over to brush her finger through my wet locks. “If you’re really upset about going to school like this, I don’t mind doing a quick spell. At least to dry your hair, if nothing else.”

I sigh and lean back in my seat. The temptation is strong, but I’ve taught myself not to accept magical help from my mom or other witches for small, petty things like this. It just reminds me of how useless I am at being a witch, and it’s better not to get used to those types of spells when it’s not like I can use them myself. It sucks, but I’ll just have to suffer through the day until I can find time to do my makeup in the bathroom.

“No, thanks.” I force myself to give my mom a smile. “Is it still okay if the guys stay over tonight?”

She said yes before when I asked, with a few embarrassing rules included as a compromise. But since things have been kind of weird ever since I found out about Henry, I want to double check. Owen’s the only one who’s actually allowed to stay over. The rest of the guys told their parental guardians they’re sleeping over at Owen’s tonight. I feel sort of bad forcing them all to lie, but I get it.
