The helper kid watched the other who had made it to the ledge come plummeting down screaming and solidified his feelings that this was another exercise in torture disguised as a training lesson to push their bodies. At sixteen, he was very aware of how his had changed since coming to the bunker. Not overly bulky, he had well-defined ripped muscles. He had actually asked his trainer if he could get leaner instead. The answer was being put in a headlock and a knife slicing through his gut. The man was temperamental at best.

A little bit ahead was the wounded boy from the holding cell. He had been shoved off twice as was he and their hands were bloody. Instead of falling all the way down, they had both found a way to grab hold of the rope during free fall. He marveled at how fast the other kid was even in his state.

Guess I better up my game.

He had defended the kid on a few occasions and paid the price for it. He knew having attachments was a no no but couldn’t help falling in love with him. That’s what he felt. Being young didn’t make him stupid and not understand his own feelings. Whether it was mutual or not didn’t matter. He would be his guardian in the shadows for as long as it took.

Back over the ledge for the third time, he braced himself for the push off. In the corner of his vision he saw the wounded kid’s trainer grab him by the hair and punch him in the face, letting him drop to the ground. He clenched his fists, angry that the trainers knew they couldn’t fight back in their current condition. A darkness loomed over him and he stared up into his trainer’s face.

All lean muscle with straight dark hair, wearing a suit, the man oozed sadistic malice. His eyes twinkled with glee as he clearly thought about what to do to him next. He glanced over at the wounded kid on the ground then back at him.

Shit!

He must have seen him do it earlier. The trainer grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and lifted him off the ground by a few inches. Where that kind of strength came from, the helper boy couldn’t imagine. Their eyes locked.

“Feeling heroic?”

He struggled a bit to stop his neck from being squeezed so he could answer.

“Not at all.”

“You want some of that? We can arrange it. Of course,” his trainer’s eyes went sinister. “we would watch. Entertainment is scarce these days.”

Horrified, the helper grabbed hold of the hand holding him up and tried to break free. His trainer must have understood the look on his face because he started laughing. Tears formed in the corner of his eyes as he kept on while not letting go of the helper boy. When he finally finished laughing, he glared at the boy.

“You want to hate me? Here’s a reason. Enjoy.”

With that, the helper boy was tossed over the ledge, this time far enough away from the rope so that he couldn’t catch it.
