The next afternoon Alex enters the library to find Marco waiting for him, “You needed to see me?”

“Yeah. We received some information earlier and are now about ninety-nine percent positive about Andreas,” Marco tells him excitedly.

“Ok. What did you learn?” Alex asks.

“We found a minor glitch in the British archives that seem to be connected to him. We originally noticed the glitch as we were searching the archives for any kind of birth record. We also noticed that his records only went back a few years, which piqued our interest even more. Because of his extensive knowledge of computers, we have a theory that he’s the one who is causing them,” Marco tells him while handing Alex a folder.

“What exactly makes you think that he’s involved?” Alex asks intrigued.

“We started looking deeper into all the glitches and noticed that every few years, the same glitch reoccurs, wiping all the records of him from before the glitch,” Marco tells him.

“That’s interesting. Are the glitches all the same?” Alex asks as he flips through the pages.

“No. The glitches always seem to happen shortly after the security updates,” Marco tells him.

Alex notices Erika walking by and calls her over, “I have a computer question.”

“Sure, what’s up?” she asks.

“Have you ever seen a virus that will only wipe out files for a specific person, but that can also update itself whenever a system runs a security update?” he asks while closing the folder and handing it back to Marco.

“I’ve heard rumors that someone created a virus like that, but to my understanding, nobody’s ever seen it in action or been able to prove that they created it,” she tells him with an intrigued undertone in her voice.

“Do you know anyone that has that kind of skill?” Alex asks.

“Not personally. I know of a hacker named Mystic that likes to create different viruses and anti-viruses. He’s also been known to counter hack the criminally-minded hackers in the world if they go too far. If anyone could have, it’d be him,” she tells them.

“So, he’s like a digital vigilante?” Alex asks.

“Yeah, that’s a good way to describe him. Why do you ask? Do you have another lead?” Erika asks with a slight bit of excitement in her voice.

“Possibly,” Marco tells her.

“Are you looking into Mystic?” she asks excitedly.

“We’re looking into a guy named Andreas Parker. We don’t know if he goes by Mystic or not, though,” Alex tells her.

“I’ve seen his work before; do you mind if I take a look?” Erika asks excitedly.

“Go ahead. Maybe you’ll see something that we don’t,” Alex tells her.

Marco shows Erika the evidence, and after reading the file, she sprints to one of the nearby computers. With her eyes glued to the screen, she starts typing frantically, following the coding rapidly with her eyes as they move across the monitor. Neither Marco nor Alex have ever seen her so focused and are highly impressed with how good she is. After several minutes of typing, she begins smiling wider than they have ever seen her do before.
