DANE

It’s been five days, and I can’t stop thinking about her. The need to tell Greer she’s my mate has me unable to sit still, and I shoot off a text asking her if she’s free. I have no idea how I’ll phrase it or how she’ll take the news, but our chemistry when we’re together gives me hope she won’t reject me outright.

I stare at my phone for a few minutes, willing her to respond. When she doesn’t, I change my shirt for the third time. There wasn’t anything wrong with the first three, but I need to give myself something to do.

Glaring at my phone when it doesn’t buzz with any new notifications, I decide fuck it, and hop on my bike. I’ll show up at her place like the obsessive stalker I am and hope she doesn’t kick my ass for it. It’s just after noon, so she may not even be home, but I’m content to wait for her.

I barely register the streets I fly down, driving faster than I probably should, but my animal is pacing inside my chest. He’s desperate to see her, a sense of urgency bringing me to weave in and out of traffic when I normally wouldn’t. The wind whips through my leather jacket, buffeting me as though it’s trying to keep me away from her.

It sure as hell can try.

A flash of bright red hair catches my eye as I park my bike, and I hop off, hurrying to catch Greer before she disappears into her apartment. I make it through the entrance of her building and slip into the elevator behind her before the doors slide shut.

“Hey, beautiful,” I murmur, her back to me. I’m about to tell her how much I’ve fucking missed her when she swings around to look at me. Her red-rimmed eyes brim with tears, and every word I was about to say dries up in my throat.

“Dane?”

My beast is battering against my insides as I scan her body from head to toe, searching for injuries. I don’t see any bruises or wounds, but she’s still holding herself as if she’s hurt. I step closer, crowding her against the wall of the elevator, my hands cupping her face gently. A growl works its way out of my throat. “Who hurt you?”

Her lower lip quivers, and I have to fight my animal to keep from shifting right here in the damned elevator. Greer would kick my ass if I did something so stupid, though.

The door dings before it opens on her floor and, though I’m tempted to keep her pinned here until she tells me exactly what happened, I can see the need to escape flaring in her eyes. She looks like a trapped animal, and I won’t contribute to her distress.

When I step aside, she hurries past me, pushing into her apartment like her ass is on fire. I’ll scold her for the unlocked door later. Pulling it shut behind me, I watch as Greer walks into her kitchen and braces her hands against the countertops.
