The Power Animal

While a spirit animal is more or less a “given” in a person’s life, a power animal is conferred by another person, such as a tribal or Craft Elder, or invoked by practitioners themselves for their medicine. Like spirit animals, power animals are also astral helpers whose energy becomes attached to the person for one reason or another. Also like spirit animals, they are a piece of the fullness of the animal’s group consciousness. By that, I mean that they are an embodiment of the specific animal’s singular essence: a falcon is a splinter of the collective Great Falcon energy; the badger is an embodiment of the Great Badger energy and so forth.

Power animals are “gained” through intention. If the seeker honestly wants the help of a particular animal’s medicine for a specific reason, that animal’s essence can be petitioned for help by means of prayer, meditation, and appropriate offerings. Like the spirit animal, the power animal also goes by the name medicine animal, as it lends its sacred medicine from the astral plane to the human experience, including magickal workings. Certainly, the choice of animal summoned should depend on your circumstances. If you need grace and eloquence when speaking, perhaps Swan is the ideal invite. Power animals have an infinite amount of energy to lend. With appropriate research and attention to detail, you can find an ethereal life partner and ally in magick. Power animals and spirit animals are also friends in astral travel. During astral projection, the animal may meet and escort the seeker through the astral landscape. Riding the back of your animal helper through astral lands can be fun and educational. Some who practice astral projection like to energetically shapeshift into the form of the animal helper before embarking on journeys or vision quests. This can allow for easier navigation and a deeper blending of the animal’s energy with that of the seeker’s.
