Chapter Five

“May I have your attention please? Can I get everyone’s attention please?” Shannon said, as she spoke into the microphone, tapping her wine glass. The Welcoming Room was enamored with lots of background noise, but as soon as Shannon spoke, the room suddenly went silent, all eyes and attention were on her. “I want to first offer my sincere appreciation for all of you taking the time from your busy schedules to be here with us tonight. As you all know, tonight’s Black-Out is to raise money for children who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. While there are those of us who were fortunate enough to pick up the pieces and restore our lives, there are many who are still struggling after all of this time to regain some sense of normalcy.

I want to thank Mr. Croix for allowing us into his beautiful home and to share in helping bring his vision to life for offering the children food, clothing, shelter, and an education. His generosity is unsurpassed and we thank him for that and so at this time I’d like for everyone to put your hands together as Mr. Croix comes forward with a special announcement,” Shannon said, as the crowd roared.

Loud claps of praise filtered throughout the room as the crowd of guests, all dressed in black, and assorted masks scattered to either side of the room looking like shot down blackbirds. The middle passage had been created for Mr. Croix to make his entrance. There were whispers of who knows what going on and jealous and you could tell that there were amused faces behind the masks on some of the male guests, including Avery.

Jordynn closed her eyes as the scent of that cologne enticed her yet again, she could smell him before she saw him and as soon as she opened her eyes, there he was again, the definition of perfection, strolling toward the platform as the applause rang through the room once again. He had a subtle smile on his face, exposing those perfect teeth and those dimples.

He offered a few nods as he waved to the crowd of onlookers as he strolled to the platform that was awaiting him. That walk was like that of a fierce black panther, the way his muscular shoulders rolled to the way he intricately put one foot in front of the other made this man so untouchable.

He made his way toward the middle of the room, eyes fixed on Jordynn. Mr. Croix’s mysterious eyes locked with hers as if they were the only two in the room. Jordynn felt a little embarrassed because she wondered if he’d known that she had watched the show earlier. Avery held on to Jordynn’s waist a little tighter at that moment because he had noticed the obvious lust that Croix had in his eyes for Jordynn.

Jordynn snickered at Avery’s jealousy as his grip became a little uncomfortable due to the fact that his pretense hadn’t affected Mr. Croix at all, in fact, his childish actions caused Mr.
