Chapter Seven

Walking back to my car after dinner, I was surprised to see lights of the store still on. Rollie must have come back to work. This, I realized, would be a good time to talk to him. I let myself in and saw Rollie waiting for me outside the open door to the classroom. I had locked the room up when I went out to eat, but of course, Rollie had a key.

“Get in here,” he said. Rollie’s face was pink above his sandy beard. He pointed through the door to the front of the classroom.

Oh dear. Our suspect list. No wonder he was upset. What would I say?

“Names, you have names here. One of them is mine. What does this mean?” he asked.

I took a deep breath. The idea of a group of sewists trying to investigate a murder seemed crazy. Even to me. And it had been my idea.

I did my best. I told Rollie about Dougie’s problem. I told him how we had decided if we could figure out who had killed Lozanski, we could get Doug out of trouble, for Heidi’s sake. I knew this sounded naïve, but there it was, the truth.

It was more awkward to explain to Rollie why his own name was on the board. Tentatively, I suggested that investigating wasn’t the same as accusing. I told him I was worried he had gone in over his head with Lozanski, and this could look bad for him. I reminded him you never knew what a guy like Wade would think. And I said I was sorry, so, so sorry.

Rollie sighed and stared at the pressed metal ceiling of the old building.

“Valerie. This is just stirring up trouble. Who needs that?” He looked at me. “You want to know if I ordered sewing machines from that guy Lozanski? The answer is yes. What’s wrong with that? I have a bit of room on the line of credit. I used it. I know how hard you are trying." He sighed,” I thought this would give you a lift.”

I felt terrible. “Rollie, I don’t deserve you,” I said, shaking. “I got on a tangent. I made up ideas in my head. I don’t know why I got into this.”

“I’ll get over it,” said Rollie. “But good thing Duck didn’t see this. He’s done his time. I thought better of you.”

I wish I was better, too, much better. I knew Darlene hadn’t talked to Duck yet. She wanted to get her nails done first. I would tell her not to bother with Duck, or the nails.

“You’re right, Rollie. Look, we all know Duck was in prison, but we don’t know why. We were just trying to help out Doug.”

Rollie seemed to make up his mind. “If I tell you something, you keep it to yourself?” he asked sharply. It would be a while until I was forgiven, I could see that.

I nodded.

“Duck was arrested because he was passing bad bills in the city,” he said.

Duck? Duck a counterfeiter? This was hard to believe.
