Building Up Dissatisfaction

The fallout from an undiagnosed and untreated set-up-to-fail relationship often has a clear ripple effect throughout the organization, and it carries with it a number of hidden costs. It is costly for the firm because perceived weaker performers’ output is suboptimized, and because the subordinates’ predicament imposes costs on their bosses, HR professionals, and the subordinates’ peers and subordinates. This multidimensional set of costs makes the process worth interrupting.

Immediate dismissal of the subordinate will make the symptoms go away for this relationship, but it triggers its own set of costs and does not solve the underlying problem. Nor does the boss who is trying to modify his or her behavior unilaterally and tacitly. As a result, the solution requires some deliberate conversations with bilateral participation. The next chapter explores exactly how these conversations can help and how bosses and subordinates can unlock the full potential of these conversations, to pave the way for a successful turnaround in the relationship.
