Servius let out a small laugh. Beautiful was a word he’d never associated with himself. The woman was so strange and sometimes said the most unexpected things.

“Like you I’m here on a mission,” he said. “We received some information that there may be some sort of exchange going on that involves the hybrids.”

Part of him felt a stab of guilt over not being more specific, but she couldn’t possibly understand what the Glycons were. They’d been kept out of the public eye, and it would only frighten her to know that those sorts of monsters existed.

As it was, it fucked with his own head to know that they existed, the poor souls stuck between dead and alive, held on by a single mission. To destroy life.

Nicole frowned and leaned toward him. He was surprised to see that she hadn’t run. Their connection might be strong, but that didn’t mean that she wouldn’t be frightened. It wasn’t exactly like bonding was always smooth between a Vestal and a hybrid.

“Do you think our things are connected?” Nicole said.

Servius shook his head and then shrugged. “There’s no telling, but it’s a very big coincidence if that is the case.”

Nicole leaned back and looked at him, a stunned expression on her face. Servius scrubbed a hand across his face and sighed loudly.

“But that’s not all,” he said. He hesitated for a moment before going on. Maybe it would be better to wait. He had already laid so much at her feet.

He looked over to where she sat and found her clear blue eyes on him. He could feel the draw of them and knew that if things progressed, she’d have to know.

“You’re a Vestal,” he declared.

She stared at him for a moment, trying to take in what it was he had said.

“I’m a what?”

“Vestal,” he said. “You’re linked with the hybrids. More specifically…” he said and shifted in his seat uncomfortably. He sucked in a deep breath. “Me.”

Nicole shook her head after a moment. “You?”

Servius moved closer to her. He could feel the heat from her soft body as he did so. He placed his hand on top of hers. “We’re like two ends of the string connected by the line that ties us.”

She looked down at his hand on top of hers. She turned it over and laced their fingers together. A steady hum pulsed through his body, and he knew she could feel it too.

“Do you feel it?” he whispered. “Do you feel our bodies calling to one another?”
