Chapter Eight
As soon as I stepped into Bonefish Grill, I spotted my older sister Olivia sitting at a booth in the corner. She waved me over and rose as I approached.
“About time,” she scolded and wrapped her arms around me. My sister could be such a stickler for time.
I blew out a breath. “Sorry. I decided to get my car washed and it took longer than I expected.” I didn't know why I always felt compelled to apologize to her.
Olivia gave a dismissive wave, with a beautifully manicured hand, and signaled for me to take a seat.
“How have you been?” she asked like we didn’t talk on the phone weekly. “Now that you’re a working woman, we rarely get together anymore.” There was no mistaking the envy. As an editor I was finally doing what I had always dreamed of, while my sister gave up a career in music to help her husband run his business.
“I’ve been good.” Better than she’d ever imagine.
Our waitress arrived with two iced teas and my favorite appetizer—Bang-Bang Shrimp.
“I hope you don’t mind I already ordered,” Olivia said apologetically.
“Please, it doesn’t matter. We always order the same thing.” We giggled and filled our plates with shrimp.
“I read your article.”
I looked up from my plate to find Olivia blushing and avoiding eye contact. “I can’t believe you wrote about…”
“A bullet.”
Her eyes widened before she was giggling again. “You always were the daring one.” She smiled and then there was that envy again. “What did Raymond think of your article?”
I shrugged and stabbed a shrimp with my fork. “I don’t think he read it.” It wasn’t like he ever asked me about my day.
“Well, that might be a good thing.” Her eyes were twinkling with mischief.
While we dug in, I took a moment to study my sister. She’s golden brown with large hazel eyes and hair that she wore long, only because her husband Christopher preferred it that way. As usual, she was dressed in a simple black dress. Diamond studs were in her ears. Her makeup consisted of red lipstick and mascara. I never could understand why she did whatever it took to draw attention away from her beauty.
“How are things going with … you know?”
Her eyes saddened before she shook her head. “He still hasn’t agreed.”
It angered me to see my sister so sad.
She blew out a weary breath and slumped in her chair. “I don’t know what else to do.”
I took a sip. “I told you what to do. Stop taking your birth control.”
“He would know. Every morning Chris watches me take my pills.”
Olivia was turning thirty-two on her next birthday. She had been yearning a baby long before I had the twins; ever since their birth only made her that more anxious to have a child of her own. Unfortunately her asshole husband wasn’t ready. Every year it was the same thing. Maybe next year. After thirteen years of marriage, Olivia was starting to think she was never going to be a mother. It angered me the way Chris controlled what she could do with her own body.
