Chapter Fourteen

Valentina

“Your bruise is all green and yellow today. Looks like pus. Beautiful.”

There wasn’t enough coffee in the world to deal with Raven this morning. Then again, I felt like I hadn’t seen her in weeks.

“You are particularly pale today,” I said.

“I know.” She clapped a bit. “I’ve been avoiding the sun more than ever. I got a new umbrella to shield me.”

Shaking my head, I laughed. “Only you would think sun was a bad thing.”

“At least I’m not with three shifters and being hunted by some weirdos.”

“Touché.”

We went about washing our faces and brushing our teeth. She was silent for the most part but, when she lifted the hand towel to her mouth, she muttered, “Any clues? I mean, about who is after you?”

“No, Velma. Not that I know of.”

A knock on the bathroom door startled both of us. “Hey, it’s me. I’m rushing to my room to change. Storm is outside your door waiting.”

“The changing of the guard. Get in here.”

He opened the door and kissed me quickly. “Hey, Raven. I’m out. V, see you in homeroom.”

“Bye,” I whispered.

Raven caught my gaze in the mirror. I thought for sure she would have some dig about Bishop. “Have you been to the Moonlight?” she asked.

“I worked there last night. Did you stop by? It was standing room only in there.”

“No. Was everyone at work? Why was it so busy?”

There was something there, under the surface. She was needling, and Raven wasn’t a needler. “Onyx wasn’t there. She was taking care of something.”

One of Raven’s eyebrows cocked. “Oh?”

“Yeah. She thinks she knows something about the guys that attacked us the other night. We asked her not to go, but she’s stubborn as hell.”

“Tell me about it.” Her posture stiffened. She had given something away.

“You know Onyx? Why didn’t you say so before?”

She blew out a breath. “I know who she is.”

“And you noticed she wasn’t there.” I left the door to the bathroom open while I ran to get my shoes. “Raven?”

“I noticed.”

“You like her? I mean…are you friends or maybe…” I waggled my eyebrows.

“Would you like another bruised eye?” she asked, layering on the black eyeliner.

“Hey, you brought Onyx up. She’s hot and cool. Sexy, too.”

Raven growled. Growled. “Do I need to remind you to mind your own business?”

“Do I need to remind you that you are the one who asked?”

“Do I need to remind you that you’re a fragile, weak human who could easily shatter?”

“Do I…”

Our back-and-forth went on for at least ten minutes, getting more heated by the moment.

“I need coffee. You’re stressing me out,” she snarked, ending the roll we were on.

“Should I tell Onyx you were asking about her?” I snorted. Another point for Valentina.

“Would you like to be drowned or stabbed?” That was her answer.

“Neither. I’ll keep my mouth shut. I know how to be a good girl.”

She snickered. “Not what I heard.”

Bishop had kissed me throughout the night. He held me tight. Anytime I moved, he got closer. We were asleep, but his wolf would’ve picked up if I was in danger.
