Chapter 18-Carae

“There is no way in hell I’m letting you go away with this man for a whole week!” Copeland yelled as he stood in the living room pacing back and forth like a mad man.

The meeting had gone smooth and I felt we were on our way to gaining another client. Mr. Braxton was amused at Larenz’s demeanor and the two quickly got lost in a conversation about football. I was impressed with the way he handled himself. I had no intentions on ruining my pleasant day by sitting here arguing with Copeland, but I needed to give him the news.

“It’s just business, Copeland! What are you concerned about? That I’ll leave you at home with a child and go cheat like you did? I’m not you. I just need to go help him close out his business deals in Alabama so he can place all his focus on keeping the business alive here. It’s only a few hours away.” I hated lying to my husband, but I didn’t need him to know what I was doing. In case anything went wrong, he and Sereniti were still safe. The less he knew the better.

“Carae, I don’t care about you cheating. I don’t believe that is what this trip is about. I’m concerned for your safety. You don’t know this man. You already said you didn’t trust him. Now you’re ready to run off in the sunset with him? What changed?”

“I was just upset that Miles didn’t leave the business to me. I didn’t want to get to know him. After spending time with him at the office, I realize I misjudged him. He’s not so bad.” That part I was telling the truth about. He really wasn’t so bad, especially his tongue and hands.

“Fine, I’ll think about it. But I have to meet him. I need to sit down and have a conversation with him. Invite him to dinner.”

“Huh?” I was dumbfounded. How in the hell was I supposed to be in the room with the both of them? I wasn’t that crazy. All hell was about to break loose. Larenz wouldn’t play nice at all. What Copeland was asking me to do would cause all types of problems. I couldn’t agree to that. “Maybe we should have dinner at a restaurant. You don’t trust him, why would you want him to come here?” I said.

I was trying to come up with a way to discourage him from thinking this was okay. Larenz didn’t need to know where we lived.

“No, I think it’ll be fine. Since you say he’s not so bad, what’s wrong with inviting him over? I’ll cook, and if he checks out you can go to Alabama with him.”

“Fine,” I mumbled. I knew I had no business crossing the line with Larenz, and now I was bringing him to my house with my husband and child. This would be an uncomfortable evening I was sure never to forget. I needed a drink.

“Honey, I left something at the office.
