10 Ways to Stay Focused at Work
Holding down a full-time job is a necessity for most people. It’s the only way you’re going to build up enough money to start your own business … or travel the world … or become CEO of your own corporation. Regardless of your lifelong ambitions, you’re going to need money to live on both now and in the future.
In order to make money in the amounts necessary to make your mark in the world, you’re going to have to advance up the corporate ladder. To do this requires focus.
You have to be able to focus on the job at hand and get it done accurately and efficiently. The difference between a person stuck in a dead-end job and a person rapidly climbing their way to the top is primarily the ability to focus. Mistakes are made because of lack of focus. Deadlines are missed because of lack of focus. People are fired or demoted because of lack of focus.
You need focus to get ahead.
Here are 10 tips you can use to stay focused at work:
1. Make sure you’re comfortable. It’s amazing how much more you can get done when you’re seated in a comfortable chair at a desk that’s perfectly suited to your needs.
2. Stay organized. Clutter kills focus. The more stuff you have on top of your desk, the more likely you are to be distracted by something other than the task at hand. Keep only the items you need on your desk; everything else should be filed away somewhere out of sight.
3. Enjoy your job. You’re going to get more done if you enjoy whatever it is you’re doing. If every day at work is dreadful, ask yourself why you’re there in the first place. There are always other options.
4. Keep snacks and drinks on-hand. You lose focus every time you get up to run to the vending machine to get a soda or a bag of chips. Keep the items you need within reach so you can grab a quick snack and a drink and get right back to work.
5. Stay away from social media. The same things that apply at home also apply at work.
6. Know what you need to do each day and get it done. Make a list at the beginning of the day of all the things you need to do. Add items to the list during the day as they come up, then cross them off when you’ve finished them. Anything not important enough to get added to the list probably isn’t important enough to worry about.
7. Prioritize. Get the important stuff done first, then worry about the busy work. Doing the important stuff first allows you to focus your attention on the big stuff at the beginning of the day. This is the time of day you’re going to have the most focus, so it’s more likely to be accurate and done in a timely manner.
8. Tune everything else out. When you’re up against the wall, turn your cell phone off and eliminate all distractions.
