Chapter 15

Sai

Waiting was the hardest part—especially when Natasha strolled back through the door like she’d only gone to the bathroom.

“Well?” I asked first.

She shrugged off her jacket. “I gave it to her aunt, and I came back. She’ll let you know if it worked.”

I slumped back. More waiting? Why didn’t she go see Saige for herself? She could have made sure it worked before coming back.

“Look, as much fun as this has been, I'm tired and no longer invested. Go to your own rooms now.”

“Thanks, Natasha.” Niall gave her a nod before heading to the door.

“I left you a few vials on your desk.” Theo pointed to the various samples he gave as our payment.

We were silent on the way back to our apartment. I kept my hand on my phone, willing a message or call to come through.

But I couldn’t help but feel like we cheated, and the magic would know. Not that I had any experience with spells or potions, let alone dark ones.

It felt too easy. The spell called for a serious sacrifice, but splitting it between the four of us and having a vampire on hand for quick healing felt like we created a loophole.

If there was one thing I knew about witch’s magic, it was that loopholes on one end left the possibility for more on the other.

The spell, as if it was a living, thinking thing, could backfire in some way because we bent the rules.

“Stop stressing.” Theo fell into step next to me as we climbed the stairs to our floor.

“I can’t. What if something went wrong? What if Natasha skipped a step, or the sacrifice wasn’t enough from each of us?”

He put his hand on my shoulder and squeezed. “We’ve done all we can for now. Once we hear from Masie, we can plan our next move. Until then, let’s focus on it working.”

If only I had his optimism. It was one of the things I liked most about Theo. Sure, he could complain or be sensitive, but it never lasted long. He bounced back. He didn’t stay down.

“I’m just scared. I don’t want to lose her.” Fate sure seemed set on making that happen.

What a tease to have her in our lives for two months and bonded for only two days before she got ripped away.

“None of us do, and we won’t give up until she’s back,” Theo said.

I didn’t have to ask Kaden or Niall if they agreed. The determination on their faces and the fierce protectiveness they both displayed for Saige told me all I needed to know. They cared about her as much as I did.

“Have you guys eaten today?” Theo asked as we walked into our too quiet home.

It still felt as if life inside was on pause.

“I can’t remember,” Niall replied.

“I did before practice.” Kaden went to the fridge and looked through the contents. “I can make some spaghetti and meat sauce.”

“Sounds good.” I went to the cabinet next to the stove and pulled out a pan and pot.
