Chapter Eleven

GAEL

LESSON LEARNED

Emotionless? Cold? Blank?

No. She is none of those things. She can be, when she needs to be, when she needs to hide, but that’s what she’s doing. Hiding. I’ve discovered that Bran has more emotion than most of us. She is boiling over with it.

But she never lets anyone see it. Not even herself. She rages, fights, kills, screams, cries, and masturbates feely and without a single hesitation. She feels everything. She doesn’t feel love because she has never loved. She doesn’t know what it looks like. But she will.

I have a little trouble keeping up with her as she runs naked through the woods because I’m attempting to be silent. She’s a fucking goddess, running with her club, attempting to find something to kill, as always. She is the freest spirit I’ve ever encountered and each moment watching her fascinates me more than the moment before.

Is she mad? Undoubtably. Even for a Xyliph, she is mad. I adore her in her great madness. There is no one like her. No one except maybe…

Me.

I suddenly smell something different in the rapidly cooling air and I lift my nose, eyes narrowed, and draw in that scent, trying to figure out what it is. It is not something I recognize. A Graedix can sift through thousands of scents in the blink of an eye and pull out the one he needs to identify—but only if he has encountered it sometime in his life.

I have never encountered this scent—but I smell something familiar surrounding it. Dirt. The rotting carcasses of creatures. Dryness. Death.

I slip a blade from its sheath and quietly unsnap the covering of my gun. I am close enough to Bran that I can reach her quickly should danger appear—and when the fine hairs raise on the back of my neck, I know that danger is coming right toward us.

Bran, though, she slides down the tree and puts her fingers between her legs and begins to masturbate, and even as I’m exasperated by her seeming foolishness and carelessness, I am turned the fuck on.

Crazy fucking Xyliph. I cannot take my stare off her.

She climaxes—I see her body stiffen and when she pulls her fingers away and grasps her club they are glistening with her juices. I am so distracted by the sex of her that I am slow to react when a beast barrels from the shadows and rushes toward her.

She leaps from behind the tree, club raised, and beams the surprised beast on the head, once, twice, and a third vicious time before he gets in his own blow. Her back is to me and I can’t see the wound, but I hear her grunt and I smell blood.

That’s it. I don’t care if it’s not time, if her seeing me now is not a good idea. She’s fighting an Island of Death monster, and I will not let her face it alone.

Before I reach her—I’m there, right there; if she turned around quickly she would catch me—she slams the driftwood up between the beast’s legs.
