Feet pounding the pavement, I bolt down the street after Max and Holly, who’ve both just decided to chase a cat that ran across their path.

"Easy guys!” I yell and give their leashes a tug, reining them in. “Good dogs,” I tell them when they give up their chase to sniff someone’s yard.

The sun is shining brightly overhead and the smell of someone's chlorinated pool wafts past my nose. Life in suburbia.

Being alone never bothered me before recently. And this morning, my sappy ass is wishing that Maren and I were walking the dogs this beautiful Monday together.

I wave at my neighbor, a woman in her early fifties with too much Botox and plastic surgery. She always seems to come out and check her mail when I'm walking the dogs.

She waves at me like she was in beauty pageants in her prime and bats her long lashes in an invitation to stop and flirt with her. I never have and won't. My friends tell me I've been too picky, but just because I've been horny doesn't mean I don't have standards.

I walk the dogs back home and feed them breakfast. Instead of opening my laptop and dealing with the long list of unanswered emails from the weekend, I take a seat on the couch, lift my phone, and dial Maren's number.

"Good morning," she says, her tone cheery and warm.

"Good morning. It's nice to hear your voice," I say, baffled at how sentimental I'm getting. I'll be damned if I ever expected this.

"Same.”

“Did you sleep well?” I ask, picturing her with her eyes closed, breaths even, sleeping next to me.

“Yes, like a baby. Did you have a good day yesterday?"

I regret not calling her, but decided to give myself the day to regroup and think about our date. It went so much better than I could've ever expected, and the kicker, she asked me to come in and I said no. I don't know whether I should slap myself or give myself a goddamn medal, but it felt like the right thing to do. "Yeah. Slept in and watched the game, how about you?"

"Sounds like the perfect day. I cleaned up around the house and then started a new painting."

I kick one foot up onto the ottoman and cross the other at the ankle. "Were you inspired at the gallery opening?"

She pauses. "I was. And you inspired me. Thank you for that."

Pride fills my chest that I could arouse some creativity in her. "That's great. I’d love to see it when you finish."

"Absolutely."

Max jumps up on the couch, curling himself next to me for a post-breakfast snooze. "I wish I could see it tonight, but it’s my standing date with my friends. Monday night football."

"That's okay. I've got plans to go to a concert tonight with my girlfriends."

I scratch Max behind the ears and he snorts out a moan. "What about Tuesday night? If you're free, you could come over to my place. I’ll make you dinner."

"Sure. Sounds great. What can I bring?"

"Yourself.
