Chapter 7

She felt much better by Thursday morning, but J.J. ordered her to stay in the guest house and relax. Alexa spent the hours organizing financial information for the ranch, and texting with Molly and Jessica. Gentle Molly worried about the stress the approaching weekend brought her.

Jess told her to “screw ’em and get out and get free!”

Out of all of them, Jess had always been the rebel.

And then her cell rang. She checked Caller ID. Jessica.

Alexa answered. “Jess. Did you find the records?”

Her cheerful friend spoke in a hushed voice. “Got ’em. Had to wait until the Big Bad Alpha was out running with his mate to use his PC. My internet connection sucks. They blocked me from most sites last month after I put my adopted brother’s photo on an internet site for gay men. No one ever has a sense of humor around here.”

Amusement filled her. Jess was forever playing jokes on her family, mainly because they weren’t “my real family.” Jessica had been adopted and still searched for her birth parents.

“I took the information you gave me on the Double B ranch and plugged it into the Lupine business database. Every alpha of every Lupine pack has to register his business with the database so there’s a file on them. Best of all, they have to file a photo, too. I’m emailing you the file I downloaded. I wanted to dig deeper into the database, but didn’t have time.”

“Won’t you get in trouble?”

“Naw. Erased my history. Big Bad Alpha is so egotistical, he won’t even suspect.” Jessica’s voice dropped. “You okay, Alexa? You need help?”

Alexa’s fingers gripped the phone. “I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me. You have your hands full with your family.”

“Oh, I keep them on their toes. You hang in there, ’kay? Love you!”

“Love you, too.”

She hung up and headed for her laptop. Alexa clicked on the email from Jessica and held her breath as the file downloaded.

She read through the text. Registered owner and authorized to conduct business: Jeremiah Taylor.

Then she looked at the photo.

Her blood pressure plummeted. Sweet goddess.

Raphael stared out from the computer screen, arrogant and cold as ever, his dark gaze hinting of secrets.
