Chapter Eight

Jackie tried to not feel too guilty over the disappointment and anger she saw in Evan’s eyes as he dropped her off in front of the Pines Springs Grand Hotel. She couldn’t blame him for feeling the way he did. He’d planned out such a beautiful moment for her down at Snowshoe Lake, and his only repayment had been for her to rudely interrupt their kiss by taking a phone call.

But what choice had she had? Her clients were the whole reason she was in Pine Springs in the first place. If they thought something was an emergency and she didn’t come, they might fire her on the spot. She couldn’t afford to lose all of that money, and she definitely couldn’t afford the hit to her professional reputation—especially not for a little fling on the side that she was having while she worked.

But even as Jackie thought this, she knew that what she had with Evan was more than just a fling. She’d tried to tell herself one thousand times already that it was just a bit of fun to distract her from the annoyance of work. After all, she barely knew Evan, and he barely knew her. Surely, he didn’t consider this anything serious.

But deep down, she knew better. The look in his eyes whenever he met her gaze said that he was very, very serious about her. The hunger she saw there was more than just a physical hunger. Obviously, there was that. They both craved each other’s bodies incessantly. But there was a spiritual hunger there, too. Jackie would have laughed if someone had told her a few days ago that she would ever think a man hungered for her with his very soul, but there was no denying what she saw in Evan’s eyes.

He wanted her for more than just her body. He wanted her. All of her.

And she wanted him in the same way. Admitting that to herself felt scary. How could she have fallen for him so quickly? She was acting completely irresponsible. She’d be leaving Pine Springs in a few weeks, and moving on to new jobs and other locations. She hadn’t asked Evan outright, but she was pretty sure he wasn’t interested in leaving Bear Mountain. Why would he be? It seemed like an amazing place, even though she hadn’t actually set foot on it yet.

But if neither of them lived in the same spot, then where did that leave them? They couldn’t very well keep up a long distance relationship indefinitely.

Which meant that this was just a fling, whether they wanted more or not.

“I’ll call you later,” Jackie said as she climbed out of Evan’s truck.

Evan looked completely unhappy with this promise. “Don’t go,” he said one more time. “Their wedding isn’t for another two weeks. What could possibly be such an emergency that it can’t wait until tomorrow?”

“I don’t know,” Jackie admitted. “But what I do know is that if I ignore them now, they’re probably going to fire me.
