The gifts continue to come.

However, Calder took my words to heart because everything I find waiting for me takes up next to no space. Except for in my stomach. The man has a mission to keep me well fed.

The first day after his surprise visit, I woke up to a text that read, Sweet or savory?

Always a fan of desserts, I texted back the former.

Midday, when I approached my little home, preparing to take Gigabyte out for a walk, I discovered a paper bag on the wooden block I use as a step. Inside was a glorious-smelling cinnamon-sugar bagel.

The attached note read, Bagels at Mary Jo’s are the best in town. She cooks them in a truck at the south edge of town. Stop by anytime and tell her Calder sent you to get another on the house.

I inhaled the delicious treat and immediately wanted to claim my other. But somehow, I restrained myself and returned to the house cleaning.

Next day, as I was brushing my teeth, there was a knock on my trailer door. I opened it to find a bright-eyed Calder holding a coffee cup. He didn’t even wait around for me to spit out my toothpaste. Instead, he handed me the drink, pressed a quick kiss to my forehead, told me to have a good day, and then trotted over to his SUV.

And I stood in a strange daze, watching him retreat in his blue polo shirt, wondering what just happened.

Took me a moment to regain my balance. After I finished my morning routine, I popped the lid off the cup and gave it a sniff.

“Almond Joy latte,” I muttered to myself.

He’d remembered.

And the days go on like that, with him sometimes sneaking me some small foodstuff and other times handing them over in person but leaving quickly after. Each gift warms my soul, but I’m left cold with him not sticking around.

His behavior has me searching for an endgame. Is his goal to get me to stay here? If so, you’d think he’d hang out more or insist on taking me around town.

It’s almost like all he wants is for me to be … happy.

Odd.

On the afternoon I find a box full of tiny biscuits for Gigabyte, I’m officially done with his disappearing act, grabbing my cell phone.

Calder picks up after the first ring. “Delta! Is everything okay?”

That throws off my rhythm. “Yes. Why wouldn’t it be?”

“No reason. Just wanted to make sure.”

Odd man.

“I’m calling to invite you over tonight. I’m going to have a campfire and try cooking dinner over it.” Outside eating means I don’t have to show him the mess of my father’s house or force him into the small area of my living space.

Safer that way.

“Yes. What do you need? How can I help? Bring a side? Some beers? Do you like guacamole?”

“Slow down!” I laugh as his rapid questions bombard me with his eagerness. My own excitement notches up with each of his words.

“Sorry.” I can practically hear his rueful grin. “Am I still invited?”

“Of course.
