Although most exercises of options are settled by the delivery of the underlying security, there are some that are settled by the delivery of cash. Specifically, index (options on an index of securities) and foreign currency options are always settled in cash. This just makes sense because investors can’t be expected to deliver an entire index for index options nor be expected to deliver the underlying foreign currency for foreign currency options.
