Chapter 18

Aria

AFTER A ROUND OF shower sex where Luca did unspeakable things with his tongue, he carried me to his room, where we retired to his bed. I'm now lying on top of him with my cheek to his chest while he leisurely runs a hand through my damp hair. It's still snowing out, and I have a full view of the blanket of snow from his glass wall. We're both quiet, with only the sound of Luca's heartbeat in my ear and Daniel Caesar's Japanese Denim softly playing in the background. It's a perfect scene, one that doesn't feel real, and I'm almost afraid to speak or move in fear that it'll all disappear.

"Dean may be a problem," I finally say. "He's not going to take this very well."

"I know. I'll handle it."

I lift my cheek from his chest. "What are you going to tell him?"

"That we're in love, and there isn't a thing he can do about it."

I let out a sigh and snuggle back against him. "I'm going to tell my mom about Dean and me. It's killing me. Not telling her." Luca's hand stops its motion in my hair, and he presses a kiss to my head. "I'm scared."

"I know."

"What if I lose her?"

"You won't. Just give her time. She'll come around."

I wipe a tear from my eye before it lands on his chest. "I hope you're right."

"There's something I need to tell you, and you're not going to like it." Not exactly the words you want to hear after having bared your body and soul to a guy you're madly in love with.

"Is it about Lizzie?"

"No. It's about me and my father and what we did to you."

I move off of Luca and sit up in bed, pulling the sheet up over my breasts. "What is it?"

Luca sits up beside me and takes my hand. "My father hired a private investigator to follow you around for a year after you moved to Arizona."

"I know. Dean told me. Bastard. Did he tell you anything? About what his guy found out?"

Dean told me that Luca didn't know about the baby. But if he knows, so be it. My baby isn't some dirty secret. But if Luca doesn't know, I'm not going to divulge that part of my life with him. Not yet. It's too painful. I carried my baby for eight months until his little spirit left his body while still in my womb. I failed him. My body killed him. And the pain, the guilt, and the anger are buried in a box that I'm not in a hurry to open. Not for Luca. Not even for my mother.

"He never disclosed any information to me."

"I don’t understand what this has to do with you."

"I convinced him to fire his guy, and he did, but only under the condition that I take his place."

"You stalked me like some weirdo hacker and reported back to your dad? What the hell, Luca? How could you do that to me?" I scoot to the edge of the bed, taking the sheet with me.
