Chapter Fourteen

Serena

Laz stretched his neck side to side as his gaze scoured over his competition. There were no horns, no wings, no red; he seemed completely in control.

I listened intently to those around me as they talked about the newcomer. A few mentioned he looked familiar and were trying to place him. I held my breath as I waited for the light bulbs to go off, but they never did.

Laz, what in the world are you doing?

A bell dinged and the vampires attacked before Laz could even move a muscle. All five of them were on him in a blur, and to everyone’s surprise but mine, Laz was able to avoid three of them instantly and fling the other two off of him before they could draw any blood.

Again, they dashed at him, still invigorated with all the buzzing energy in the air, and once more Laz avoided them. They didn’t leave him any room to move to put a fence at his back, keeping him in the center, but none of them touched him long enough to leave any damage.

Another attack. For any other Supe it would be a waste of energy, continuing to batter an opponent at this speed, but the bloodsuckers were relentless. Their faces were filled with annoyed rage over the fact that despite the uneven odds, they had still yet to bite or scratch him.

Laz smirked at them, toying with them in the way only he knew how. What I didn’t understand was why wasn’t he using his magic? He could obliterate them all within seconds if he wanted to. The vampires thought they were the cats circling the mouse in the center, but it was in fact the other way around. And Laz wasn’t some house cat; he was a tiger toying with its paltry prey. He hadn’t hurt any of them either, simply kept them off his back. He was prolonging this.

Silver eyes landed on me, and I sucked in a sharp breath. Why was he taking his eyes off the enemy? He watched me for two heartbeats before weaving his gaze through the rest of the crowd.

He frowned. Whatever his plan was, it wasn’t working.

This time when the vampires came at him, he avoided four with such grace it looked like a choreographed dance. Except this dance ended with bloodshed.

Laz grabbed one vampire by the head and shoulder, and to my horror, bit deeply, directly into his neck. Fangs that grew within seconds sunk into the pallid skin and he ripped. Blood spewed everywhere, coating his entire upper torso as it sprayed. Three of the other vampires shrieked in horror while Graystone bared his sharp teeth in a mute murderous rage.

The crowd went wild, and when Laz bent his head back to roar, his entire mouth a deep red, everyone crowed with him.

My inside twisted, recoiling at the gruesome sight.

Laz dropped the lifeless corpse onto the ground and eyed his competition again. When he smiled, teeth burgundy instead of white, they all let out their own deafening cry.
