Catalina’s office was on the 10th floor, and I was nervously tapping my fingernails on my arm throughout the elevator ride. Now I had not just one thing to be nervous about but two. What was Marcus thinking, inviting Connor to the office without mentioning it to me? Okay, maybe he had no reason to mention it to me, but seeing that boy—that man—again after those years still had me shaken. Apparently, the Marine Corps had done him nothing but good; I didn’t remember him being so…broad when we were younger. And did his voice get deeper? I couldn’t stop thinking about that exchange we’d had.

Or do you just get off on scaring people?

His voice, the way his eyes roamed over my body…ugh, why could he still make my heart race like that? Of course, that was all before he’d realized who I was. After that, there were no signs of flirtation in his voice or his eyes. Not that I wanted to see them there!

When the elevator doors slid open, I was grateful for the relief from my own messy thoughts and strode quickly to my sister’s door. “Come in,” she called when I knocked. She started to smile at me, but her eyes quickly fell to my stained skirt. “Sooo…no coffee?”

“Did you know Connor was going to be here today?” I asked, trying to keep the distress out of my voice. Her eyes widened for a second, then a sympathetic smile curled her lips, and I looked away. “No. Do not give me that face.” Cat was the only person I’d ever talked to about my stupid little girl crush on Connor, so she must’ve assumed there was still something there.

“I knew Marcus was talking with him lately, but I didn’t know they had plans to get together. Is he still here?”

“I don’t know. He wasn’t here to talk to me,” I grumbled, arms crossed. “But he still managed to make fun of me in the three minutes we spent around each other. Just like old times, right?”

“He wouldn’t tease you so much if you didn’t respond to it,” she pointed out, the same way she had in the past. Déjà vu all over again. “But he’s always had a talent for pushing your buttons, I guess.”

His hands aren’t going anywhere near my buttons, thank you. That image of him combing his fingers through his messy hair cropped up in my mind again, prompting me to wonder what his hands would feel like in my hair. Not mussing it or flipping it over my head like he used to but sliding through and gripping it for another reason. That cocky grin, that deep, teasing chuckle…

God, what was wrong with me? I hadn’t had any of those silly fantasies about him in years, yet seeing him just once was apparently enough to spark my imagination again. “Whatever,” I said, my voice getting a little shrill as I tried to push those thoughts to the back of my mind again.
