Jasmine noticed the change in Edith almost right away.

“You’re in a very good mood lately,” her co-worker told her, three days after Thorsten had arrived in Edith’s life again. “What’s going on?”

Edith only smiled enigmatically, not wanting to speak the words aloud lest she put a curse upon them, but her happiness truly was infectious. It was difficult not to smile, even in the darkest days of her job.

Sister Bernadette seemed to be deteriorating but finding her replacement in the shelter was proving to be harder than just calling on the archdiocese.

“She’s not doing any harm by being here,” Jasmine sighed when Edith talked to her about the nun.

“No, of course she’s not, but I’m worried about her. She needs medical attention, minimally,” Edith agreed. “We’ll have to get her an appointment at the clinic while we wait to hear back from the archdiocese.”

She didn’t say what she was thinking—that the cardinal was not likely to take an aging nun’s health into much consideration, not when she was being cared for well enough.

It will always be a man’s world. Us women have to fend for ourselves, she thought.

“She’s not a danger to anyone, not if one of us keeps an eye on her when we’re on shift,” Edith continued and she and Jasmine had agreed to the arrangement, even though it sometimes interfered with her plans with Thorsten.

“Do you have a man now?” Jasmine pressed. “Is that why you’re so smiley all the time?”

“Oh, what? Now I can’t be happy without a man?” Edith shot back teasingly.

“I never said that. You would never hear me say anything that stupid,” Jasmine chortled. Edith ducked into her office, still beaming as she reached for the landline to call Thorsten. He answered after the third ring and Edith instantly felt guilty.

“Are you working?” she asked, sighing. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have interrupted you.”

“Actually, I’m just working on a hobby of mine,” he confessed. “I should be working so I should be thanking you for stopping me from procrastinating.”

Edith giggled.

“What hobby is that?” she asked lightly. “Anything I get to know about?”

“Maybe I’ll show you tonight when you come over,” he promised. Edith felt a rush of pleasure shoot through her body at the reminder but she willed herself to be calm.

We’re taking things very slow. Just because I agreed to go over to his house for dinner tonight doesn’t mean anything will happen between us.

“Are you sure you want to come get me?” she asked, lowering her voice. “It’s a long flight to risk in your dragon body.”

“Nah,” Thorsten countered. “It’ll be dark by the time you’re done working, and if I don’t come get you, it’s a two-and-a-half-hour drive. You’ll be asleep by the time you arrive.”

“Well, we could reschedule for a day when I’m off and we have time for the drive—”

“If I didn’t know you better, Edie, I’d say that you’re trying to make excuses not to come. If the idea makes you uncomfortable—”

“NO!” she cut him off, blushing as she realized how loud she’d been.
