Chapter 6

It was a little after four-thirty when we arrived. Sage was pacing the living room, muttering, “If he caught a case right before he was supposed to leave…”

“I didn’t,” Mike replied, closing the front door behind him. “Traffic sucks, and it’s a damned Sunday.” He shook his head, paused to kiss Sage, then went into the kitchen. When he returned, he had a cup of coffee. “I presume everyone’s present and accounted for,” he said as he sat at one end of the sofa.

“Yep.” Sage settled at the other end. Brody and Jon were seated in the armchairs, while I was perched on the edge of a dining room chair Sage had moved between the armchairs.

“All right, let’s get started. Tonio, did anyone say anything which seemed off to you?”

“Yeah, the whole thing with David and someone in the dressing room. There’s no way, if it happened, he wouldn’t have told me. No way in hell!”

Mike nodded when Sage told him what I’d said. “I tend to agree with you. It was obvious, from our interview with David, that he loves you.”

“Not to be negative, or whatever,” Brody said, “but he is an actor.”

“It does not mean he was faking his feelings,” I replied angrily. “I know him. He does love me. Even if the person Glenn overheard was him, he was turning down the other guy. But it wasn’t. He wouldn’t keep something like that from me. He just wouldn’t!”

“What if he didn’t want to worry you, or hurt your feeling?” Brody asked.

Sage was passing on what we were saying to Mike. After Brody’s comment, Mike said, “He’s got a point, Tonio. Let’s put it aside for the moment, though. Was there anything else which hit you as off?”

“Tommy. I thought he really overreacted when he heard I was murdered. Yeah, we sort of worked together but only peripherally. Frank was my boss. I had nothing to do with Tommy other than going in and out of the shop to get something I needed. When he went into his office, after the guys told him I’d been murdered, he was visibly disturbed.”

“Like, maybe, he was hoping your death was an accident?” Mike asked when Sage told him what I’d said. “Or he was hoping no one would find out it wasn’t?”

I thought about it for a moment. “Like he didn’t want anyone to find out it wasn’t. But that’s just the impression I got and I could be reading something into it, given the circumstances.”

“Did he have any reason to want you dead?” Brody asked.

“Hell, no. Not that I know of, anyway.”

Sage passed on our conversation. And again, when Jon said, “Maybe Elaine found out something she shouldn’t have and someone killed Tonio as the next step in making everything seem like an accident, including her death when he gets around to it.”

“We’ve already thought of that, although not relating to anyone specific, so far,” Mike replied.

“Then there’s the thing with Tim, Janice, and Alan,” Sage said. “Yeah,
