One of the sources of concern to many women, including many who did not have any noticeable ill effects after the abortion, was the possibility that they had been injured in some way without knowing it. Another common concern was the fear of becoming pregnant again by continued use of inadequate contraceptive methods. In order to have a physical check-up and obtain contraceptive advice, many of the women were anxious to consult a regular doctor after the abortion.

Sixty-nine of the women went to doctors and told them that they had had abortions if the doctors did not already know it: nineteen of these women asked only for a physical examination and fifty requested both an examination and contraceptive advice. Nine more women went to doctors for examinations but did not tell them that they had had abortions. Thirty-two of the women either did not care about having a check-up or were afraid that the doctor could recognize an illegal abortion from examination and stayed away.

Forty-four women had gone to their “regular doctors” before the abortion, to ask for a pregnancy test and in some cases for help in arranging an abortion. Fourteen of these women changed doctors after the abortion and most of these said that they would never go back to their regular doctors, either because they had been asked for help and had refused to give any, or because the women feared they would turn them in to the police, tell their parents or shame them in some way. Twenty of the women gained doctors in the course of the abortion proceedings, most of whom had been sympathetic, some of whom had offered help in arranging the abortion, and many of whom had told the women to come back for a checkup after it was over.
