I’m up at three on Monday morning. I have a big security system to install, and the customer would like most of it completed before his employees come in for work. After the job is finished, I want to get to the gym for my usual morning workout.

I don't wake Sharon. She needs her sleep after the sex we had this weekend. I know she has to work today, and her photography class meets tonight. I tiptoe out of the bedroom, closing the door behind me. My plan is to do the install, grab breakfast at Granola Grannie's, and head to the gym. I shower in the guest bath. On the way through the kitchen, I pour a glass of orange juice and head out the door.

It’s still dark when I get outside, so I don't see the note left on my window until I’m inside the van. I get out and grab the note, thinking who the hell would leave a note in my van when it’s parked at Sharon's.

The note is short and to the point, She was mine first, and you need to move on. It must be her crazy ex-husband. Lawyers and crazy people always think they’re above the law and more powerful than other people. Maybe right now he thinks he has an advantage, but I know I can show him otherwise.

I fold up the note and tuck it carefully into my wallet. I don't want to lose it because I’ll need it later, possibly to show it to the police, but, more importantly, to see if Sharon recognizes the handwriting.

I forget about the note until about two when I finish up with my workout. I call a friend of mine who works in what he calls “civilian covert ops” or what we would call private investigations.

"Hey, Roy, I need your expertise on something."

"Anytime, Sean. I still owe you for saving my ass during our last deployment. What can I do for you?"

"I need the worst of the worst that you can find on a Bobby Avery. He's an attorney here in town and my girlfriend's ex-husband. He’s giving her a hard time about getting back with him, and I want to run him off. I need some information that will get his ass in a bind that he won’t be able to talk himself out of."

"It won't be hard to find shit on him. He’s a complete dirtbag. In fact, I have a little information on him already. But let me dig a little deeper. I may have enough to get him disbarred. Would that be a big enough threat to get rid of him?"

"Maybe. I’d like to find something that would embarrass him socially if everyone in town found out about it.”

"Okay, give me two days."

"Talk to you later."

I don't want to mention this to Sharon, but I want her to be careful, and I want to know if Bobby comes her around her place again. I have just the solution for that problem.
