Chapter 10

When Naira woke, it was dark, and she was alone. Memories of the conversation with Scott filtered through her mind. Had he really said all that? Had he really made it clear that maybe it was time for the two of them?

She wasn’t at all sure about that. Some of their latest conversation was drifting back and forth in a hazy drug-induced memory. When the door opened, she shifted, so she could watch as Scott came in quietly.

“Are you awake?” he murmured.

“I think so.” She yawned. “I feel like shit though.”

“Of course you do.” He walked over, bent down, and kissed her gently on the forehead.

She frowned at that. It was definitely new, but she’d take it.

“All forgiven?” he asked.

“I’m not even sure,” she admitted. “So much of whatever conversation we had is a haze.”

“Hopefully not all of it,” he teased lightly.

She shrugged. “I don’t know. Depends if we talked out all our differences or not.”

“Not all of them, I’m sure,” he replied, “but most of them, yes.”

“You want to give me the CliffsNotes’s version then?” she asked in a dry tone.

He sat down and searched her face intently. “Seriously?”

She shrugged. “I guess I don’t really remember everything very clearly.”

“That’s fine,” Scott said, “as long as you remember enough, and we’ll work through the rest.”

“Work through?”

“Yes,” he repeated, “we’ll keep you alive through this whole mess, then see what comes of our world afterward.”

She frowned. “I heard something in there about all that, but I don’t think I got that level of clarity from my memories.”

He smiled. “I promised I’ll try to be good and help you remember as we go on.”

“If you say so.” She yawned again.

“Can you go back to sleep?” he asked, with a frown. “If you’re that tired, maybe you should.”

“It’s not even a case of tired as much as it’s just not feeling quite awake yet,” she murmured.

“I’ll go get you a cup of coffee,” he offered. “That might help.” She watched as he disappeared again, and she smiled. Maybe it would be a good day after all. She wasn’t too sure where they were at right now, and she would have to clarify it when he came back, but maybe, just maybe, they had a chance.

When he returned with a cup of coffee a few minutes later, she was sitting up against the headboard of the bed and rubbing her scalp.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

She nodded. “I’m fine. At least I will be when I get some caffeine,” she replied, with a more cheerful tone than even she expected, once Scott handed her the cup of hot coffee. She was still very wary, not exactly sure that they had resolved everything between them, but he seemed to even get that too.

“As we take our relationship step by step, don’t worry about it,” he suggested.

She frowned. “It’s hard not to. I’m not exactly sure where we stand.”

“We stand wherever we want to,” he murmured. “However, we’re definitely in a whole lot better place than where we were before.
