CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Far away, on the barest lip of the eastern horizon, the sky was just beginning to tinge from black to deep purple.

His spine crackled and popped as he stretched. Dred rolled her shoulders, then propped a foot on the base of the Howling Rock to stretch the back of her leg.

“I can’t believe you let me babble on that long.”

“I can’t believe you can babble on that long.” If she hadn’t started to yawn, he would have gladly let her babble until she ran out of lozenges as well.

All he ever thought to tell Rawley sounded more like an action report than a conversation. Dred had told him jokes, the plot of a movie, and a fair portion of her favorite stories. The best part about that was Lennox got to hear them too.

She rubbed her arms. Despite it being summer, there was a slight chill before dawn. He wrapped her in a hug and she leaned into him. “Thank you for spending so much time with him.”

Her reply was to snuggle closer. Lennox had never just stood and held someone before.

It wasn’t nearly as awkward or uncomfortable as he’d thought. Still, she was chilled, and yawning, and it was almost dawn. He pressed a kiss to her hair and asked softly, hoping she didn’t answer, “Do you want to head back?”

Leaning back, she trusted him not to let her fall as she looked up at him. “I want to watch the sunrise from an east-facing cliff.”

He dipped her even further, planting a soft kiss on her lush mouth. “It just so happens, I know of just such a spot.”

~~~~~
It was the perfect spot, made even more so that he kept it fully stocked, including a warm blanket and snacks. The outcropping wasn’t very large, and she never would have sat on it, even if she could have reached it without dragon assistance.
But she did have dragon assistance, in the form of two strong arms wrapped around where she sat between his legs, leaning against his chest, watching the sun slowly break the horizon without a single thing breaking her line of sight.
It was perfect, but she sighed anyway, the sound heavy in the quiet. She’d wanted some quiet time, but she wanted to tell him too. Needed to talk about it, in case her mind twisted and frayed. “I’m starting to remember things.”
His fingertips trailed up and down the side of her arm. “Like what?”
“Nothing concrete. No address or GPS coordinates, unfortunately. Glimpses of rooms. Snippets of conversations. Blurry faces, some features sharp. Voices. Other sounds.”
When she didn’t elaborate, he brushed his lips over her ear. “Dred? What’s going on in that mind of yours?”
She snuggled closer. “Nightmares, only I’m awake, and they’re not mine. It’s like, I’m having my own memories, and everything looks like an eccentric family in a fancy castle, but it’s just a veneer. Underneath are all these other memories, but they’re not anything I actually saw or heard or felt.”
“The insider Fiona keeps talking about?”
“Maybe.
