AFTER ALL THE SNOW falling last night, Sam had expected several inches on the ground, but he stood behind the glass in his exercise room and looked upon at what was turning out to be a mere dusting. If he didn’t look at the actual ground and instead gazed upon the blue pool just yards away, it told a different story. Steam drifted up from its surface, and Sam wondered just how high his fucking electric bill was going to be. He knew he could just cover it and not heat it at all—but he was planning to use it. Who cared if it was freezing outside?

But right now, that damn pool was the last thing on his mind. Instead, his thoughts kept going back over yesterday. Grace Ward had captured his mind and heart in the space of an afternoon and something had happened that he still had a hard time admitting now.

He was fucking in love with her.

Yes...in love.

How the fuck had he let that happen?

It didn’t matter how. It was his responsibility as a good man to keep his paws off her, to stay away. And that was what he planned to do. Even when he entertained the possibility for a few seconds, he came right back to reality. He was no good for Grace. She was probably the sweetest thing he’d ever met and he couldn’t allow himself to corrupt her. She was innocent and free and happy—and he was cynical and worldly.

He was no doubt the worst thing that could ever happen to her.

But, as Sam showered off the sweat from his workout, he realized he’d made her a promise sometime yesterday to take her to her friend’s house again. In spite of the fact that he needed to keep his racehorse behind the gate, he needed to follow through with his promises. He’d already hurt her and let her down. He could at least keep his word.

He didn’t have to be a complete asshole.

So he got out of the shower and toweled off, quickly drying his hair and beard and throwing on a t-shirt, jeans, and boots. It was just a couple more minutes before he was knocking on her door, ready to apologize. He’d glanced at the clock and knew he could get her there in the nick of time if they left now.

But there was no answer, even after knocking and ringing the bell and waiting.

She probably wanted nothing to do with him.

Emotions aside, though, they should be able to do this. He could give her one last ride and then they could go back to being just neighbors. He knew now that he couldn’t even cross over into the “just friends” zone. It wouldn’t work.

Well, she was either ignoring him or still in bed, so he got out his phone and sent a text. Hey Grace, thought you needed a ride again today. I’m ready when you are.

He turned on her porch and looked over the landscape, waiting for her reply. The sun was out, bright and warm, even though he couldn’t feel it under her eaves.
